Its more likely the hd itself died, not the enclosure, but its fairly easy to swap drive inenclosures so you might go ahead and try it.

It would help folks here in solving your problem to know the following information:

-What type of USB external drive do you have? (Model, etc . . .)
-What type drives does it use; Pata or Sata?
-You said it was a 500GB drive - is this one drive or multiple drives in the USB enclosure?
-Is the device (enclosure and/or hard-drive/s) still under warranty?

Depending on what kind of external set up you have, here are a few things to try:

--Carefully take the enclosure apart, and inspect the connection/s to the drive/s - see if perhaps the drop caused a power or data cable to unseat or fall out.

--Find out who manufactured your drive, and check online to see if they have or suggest any diagnostic tools for your model of drive, or have any other suggestions for data recovery

--If there is just one drive in the USB enclosure, it's better to try and mount it as a second drive in a PC. It's possible the fall damaged the circuitry in the USB unit itself, and not the hard-drive itself.

Actually opening the hard-drive and trying to move the disk (or platter) to another drive is not a viable option - you would almost certainly need another drive of the exact type and capacity, and thus you risk ruining yet another drive. I wouldn't attempt it even if I had an industrial clean-room with all the trimmings to try it in. (Unless I totally misunderstood what you meant - that is, if you mean moving the hard-drive itself from that USB device to another USB device, then by all means give it a try. If it was the enclosure that was damaged then yes, your info should still be there. Having re-read your post, I think you actually do mean this . . . )

I know there are multiple-drive USB external enclosures, but I have no experience with them. The suggestions above are actions I have actually taken in dealing with external enclosures or hard-drive problems, and I hope you find them of some use. If you post back with more info on your equipment I'm sure other more experienced souls here will be able to help. :)
