My daughter has Sims 2 and several expansions on her Win 7 laptop. It was freezing up and not working right so I decided to uninstall them all and reinstall. The base game installed fine and a few expansions then I got to Sims 2 Pets and it kept stalling at 58% saying it couldn't install that certain file. I tried several times but kept getting that error so I thought maybe the disk was bad. I burned a copy of the disk and tried it but got the same error. I finally gave up trying to install that expansion but I noticed there was a Sims 2 Pets folder left on the C drive with files in it so decided I should delete it since the install wouldn't complete. When I try to delete that file, I get an error message saying that it can't be deleted because of an I/O device error.

Any ideas first on why that one expansion won't install and next why I can't delete the file?

Update - I ran Chkdsk and it found errors. After that I was able to delete the file then installed the game just fine.

I don't have the answer for why it the unistaller wouldn't remvove the one folder or why it can't be removed. Every time I have run into the problem the error message said that some file in the folder was in use. However, I do have a suggestion. Several months ago I started using this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Programs_Manager__d6942.html

It monitors installations of programs and then monitors them after that. If you decide to remove the program, it will get rid of everything, including registry entires. Just install it, and it starts monitoring even when it's not in the system tray. It really works.

To get rid of stubborn folders/files, I use GIPo Move on Boot. Comodo Programs Manager will give you the option to force remove elements of a program sometimes, but there isn't an option to select which ones like with GIPo. GIPo is free, but I don't see it here at MG...

I suggest an unistaller like Comodo Programs Manager for sure...much better than native Windows uninstaller...

If Chkdsk found errors, that would mean that the drive may be going. How many errors did it find, and also, you can run a S.M.A.R.T. tool that will tell you if the drive may be ready to go.

It may be time to get a new hard drive for her machine, especially if she is having problems with freezing, etc.. How old is the machine btw?

It's a couple of years old. I don't know exactly how many errors it found but it was several. The computer is running great now after doing the CHKDSK. I'll look into running the S.M.A.R.T. tool and see what that finds. Thank you!
