Have a Simpletech xternal HD. Plug into USB port and get message 'The request could not be performed because of an I/O error. No explanation of type of error or way to correct. Have over 200 GB of data on this drive. Is there anyway to retrieve it?

    Help appreciated, Mike

    Hi Mike

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

But you could try this as it could be a driver issue, is to open Device Manager up and then in the View Tab at the top click Show Hidden Devices and do you have any yellow ! marks by any device, if so what?

Also just in case that the driver that is for that device is corrupt we can recreate it, in Device Manager still, expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch and note the devices listed, then plug in your external HDD, and note the change on an additional device (likely will say USB Mass Storage Device) right click that one and choose Uninstall, then unplug your USB HDD and then plug it back in and the driver for it will reinstall.

    Then test your device again.

    Hi Mike,
Could you tell me what OS you are running as you need to run... "chkdsk X: /f" .... (no quotes and replace X with whatever drive it is),As the external has corrupt files that is giving you this error, running this command will correct it.
If you are running xp or older versions select RUN from start menu and type cmd

from there type "chkdsk X: /f" no quotes and replace X with whatever drive it is.

It should perform a scan and once complete should work just like new!

If you are running Vista or 7 In the Start Menu search box area type cmd, then right click on cmd (at top), and click on Run as administrator from there type "chkdsk X: /f" no quotes and replace X with whatever drive it is.
