    Ouch !
Generally not easy.... but there are some software programs that offer to recover data-- You can try using a knoppix live cd--- You download the file (freeware), and save thw iso file, then use your burning software to burn to cd - then run it live from the cd, and it is sometimes possible to copy the files ( they are still on the disc, just not accessable, without outside influence, like this.

I will find the link for you for knoppix, but meanwhile look in majorgeeks downloads section , for data recovery, unless someone else pops in to help, while I am sorting my notes.

BY the way-- the less you use your computer, until trying to recover anything , the better, or, you will overwrite the data.

You can try to use a usb memory stick to save anything you can pick up from the live cd- you do not load knoppix onto your hard drive but actually run it from the cd. It will show up things on your windows system, that it is possible to copy to another disc, like a usb stick, perhaps a floppy disc.

That is the free way that might just help - it may also be possible to connect your hard drive as a slave drive to another computer, and by pressing start, right click My Computer, and then left click manage, click disc management in the box that comes up, and the 'slave' drive will show up as another drive letter, and you can often click explore, and then if the data shows up you just copy it to the other hard drive/usb stick.
Proffessional data recovery is too expensive, unless its really life , or, death - not just crying material.
    Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. My dumb computer won't burn a CD, only music. I thought that recovery was NOT supposed to delete your files. I wanted to run restore but like I said it got rid of my restore points too. There's a lot of pictures that I need to recover for my daughter's photography class. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried different discs ? or, updating the firmware on your writer ?most writers , like samsung, phillips, etc: have a firmware update that ,often, gives more writing opportunities for different modes of cd/dvd discs.
You can purchase a ready made Linux live cd, very cheaply from that link. A usb stick is also very reasonable (I just purchased a gb usb stick, as a transfer utility for my grandson, and it was only £5.95).... With these you can just drag and drop files .
If you can get hold of the knoppix live cd,, first, to see if it can see the folders you need, before spending anything , it would then, at least let you know if it is possible to recover them....it uses binary numbers to locate jpeg (pictures ) etc:,

Try one (or more) of the below free programs. I have used 2 of them to recover photos and they worked quite well. I wasn't able to recover everything but I did get the bulk of it.:)

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/mgicons/green_caution.gif PC Inspector Smart recovery

As an FYI for future reference: MajorGeeks "must have free downloads."

    Thanks AbbySue, ...
I have used PC Inspector, but not the others, ..a good list.
As I said, earlier, though, Linda Log, the less you use the computer that you wish to recover files on, the better, so as not to overwrite files that you are after.
