I really did it this time

O.K., I got out of control tonite and deleted MANY reg. entries using RegscrubXP. The P.C. boots but almost all my shortcuts are .lnk files and I can't start them. I have a reg backup made with Ccleaner from yesterday but when I double-click and hit yes the send it to the current registry then reboot I get the same problems. well at least that serves as a lesson to all of us that are tempted to mess around with things.

 

i did that once with regcleaner so i feel your pain. Matter of fact i downloaded Pest Patrol Corporate Edition and ran a scan...it ended up deleating over a thousand of my LimeWire music files. i wanted to cry....lol.

 

I did the same thing with something else
but I ended up runnin regscrubxp(notregscrub120)
and letting regscrub look for eveything that needs to be fixed
and not doing it myself
that took care of most of them

and I think I used this(see attached)

but I am not certain
I think that fixes the defaults for xp reg entries
but I am a dummy

aye, I borked more machines than I care to share back in my days of win3.1 and win95. I have to blame lucas arts for that though. If it weren't for his games, I never would have started to tinker trying to free extended memory

 

i dont buy into the learning the hard way. i believe that to learn you need a teacher. aloha

O.K., just got back from work. Quick update. Almost all dsktop icons have a wordpad looking symbol and have a .lnk suffux. None work either. I can start programs if I manually find the .exe file in the program files folder but I'm not able to create any new desktop shortcuts. Also, going to Start/programs doesn't work either. Anyone seen this before?

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.lnk] <- thats your problem. You must have screwed that entry up somehow while cleaning. Do you have a registry backup?

Regscrub make a backup copy of the entry it will look like this:

backup-04-09-21-xxxxxx.reg on the x the will be number.....
