Having removed IE from my old computer I thought it would run more quickly - never use IE anyway. But when I run CC cleaner it still shows finding IE files? Have I missed something? Am using XP

Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows and cannot/should not be removed as this can result in major problems for Windows.

I do not use IE but keep it updated for security reasons because Windows uses it. Even when I don't use it to browse the web, it shows Temp IE files when I run Ccleaner

The temp files that Ccleaner is finding that belonged to IE are proof that you have not actually removed it, you may have hidden all traces of it so that you think it has been uninstalled.

Just don't worry about it, but you should not try any further attempts to uninstall it as your version of Windows will probably fail. Removal (if you could) would not speed up your computer.

If you tried to uninstall it from the Control Panel, all it has done is remove the latest version that you had installed and reverted to the previous version. You safest bet is to install IE 9 and check for updates. If you do not use it you can remove the shortcuts and entries in the Programs list, so that you don't see it.

It is not possible to install IE9 in XP, it is for Vista and later only.

My mistake, never read the last bit of the OP about which OS he has.

For "install IE9" in my post, read "Install IE7"

I think (on XP at least) IE is also required to install Windows Updates.

Hmm .. I tried to download IE7 and when I went to install it said "can't install because a more recent version of IE has been detected on this computer" (or similar). Do I go for IE9?

No, as Earthling said, "It is not possible to install IE9 in XP, it is for Vista and later only." But, you can go up to IE8 with XP.
