I seem to have accidentally removed my SoundMax audio driver card

Help! Earlier tonight, I was uninstalling a bunch of the usual junk that accumulates on a computer after a year of owning it when I accidentally removed my Soundmax audio driver. Now I can no longer get sound on any video I watch on YouTube, sounds from my Yahoo Messenger, etc.

I attempted to download the driver again from various places online that the Soundmax audio driver is located as a free download, but it will not let me install the software upon trying to run the installer, telling me that I have no audio system at all on my computer any more (these problems did NOT start until IMMEDIATELY after I accidentally uninstalled the Soundmax audio drive from the 'Uninstall' program I access via my Control Panel).

My computer is a Dell desktop, it was built especially for me by the guy who sold it to me (I'm not sure if this is what is defined as "pre-built"), my system is Windows XP, it has an intel pentium 4 HT, and at the top of the tower it has the logo Optiplex Gx620. I am hoping all of this info about my computer is sufficient for you to give me some suggestions on what I can do to get my sound back.

Please note that a few links I tried downloading drivers from that I found in another thread similar to this one from 2008 all led to pages that claim to have been moved or eliminated, and the free version of Everest is no longer supported.

I am hoping you can help me!

    Hi

To start with I would uninstall any Soundmax driver you have downloaded from the internet and then reboot, then What Windows version and Service Pack are you using? as this infor can hel with some extra drivers or updates that maybe needed.

If your Windows XP is not at SP2 at least then install either the SP3 Service Pack HERE or the HD Audio driver update HERE, reboot. (note this UAA Audio driver neeeds at least SP2 to be installed)

But try the below and install the chipset driver from HERE and reboot, crucial to reboot to allow the Operating System to then aquire the chipset driver infomation, which allows other drivers to install OK.

Then instal the Audio driver for your DELL GX620 from HERE then reboot and test audio.

If you are still after a reboot having audio issues, then tell us any error messages you get and if you have any yellow ! marks i Device Manager and if so by what device?

Another thing to try is the Fixit HERE
