I receive this E-mail this morning

I have a visa credit card for three years now.

    The e-mail:

    Dear VISA valued user,

Due to concerns, for the safety and integrity of the VISA community we have issued this warning message.
It has come to our attention that your account information needs to be updated due to inactive accounts,
frauds and spoof reports. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew
your records you will not run into any future problems with your VISA card. However, failure
to update your records will result in your card suspension. This notification expires on July 20 2004.

Once you have updated your account records your VISA card will not
be interrupted and will continue as normal.

Please follow the link below and renew your account information

    h**ps://www.visa.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=login-run

    END.

But when you take the mouse over the link in my status bar i see:
    http://213.176.140.253/.visa/

So i think that's what you call a spoof address???

So guys what should i do.

I would call Visa using the phone number on the back of the card, and ask them about it. It sure sounds like a scam.

yeah as DP said call your card vendor as I highly doubt that an email would come from VISA themselfs.. its more likely to come from your card issuer.

    this from VISA site.....
especially when using VISAs site and checking my card re-directs me to my card issuer.... CitiBank!

    http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/cards/account_balance.html?it=h2_/index.html

    some info from VISA
    http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/secure_with_visa/online_security.html?it=ss_/index.html#c

also the url isnt a IP number for the usa its the above url.... CALL your card issuer now and DO NOT reply to that message.

no establishment would e-mail you and tell you to update your account information. When unauthorized account access has been detected, the client is sent a LETTER via snail mail informing the client of said breach and what actions have been taken by the company to rectify the situation and what suggestions/actions they require of the client.

do not visit the links ESPECIALLY if the links includes an IP address as part of the URL. that's a red flag right there. But the e-mail itself should be the first red flag.

Why shouldn't you click a link if it has an IP address as part of the URL?

Because it usually means the URL that it displayed is wrong. Sometimes used to hide the real location (the IP address) so that you think its another link.

And also because reputable sites don't hide their names behind IP addresses. If it really was from Visa (or American Express, or eBay, or PayPal, or Earthlink, or BankOne, or any one of a dozen or more other places I've gotten them from, most of which I do not have an account with), it wouldn't be an IP address you click on, it'd be the name of the site.

The same cautions should apply to telephone calls. NEVER give any key credit/social Security etc. info out over the phone, or people knocking on the front door.

They may be who they say they are but they could say they are your Fairy Godmother, it doesn't make it true.

It's a scam, you should see some I get for PayPal, full of misspelled words. What is scary, think of the people that actually respond.

Why are you trusting using your computer for something so important? I would tell visa to send me the bill via snail mail.

I just did my books today  and I am always happy to have a paper trail. Makes life much easier and you know who your dealing with.
