Hello....I know my problem is related to hardware, but I need a software fix to fix my modem install problem!! But I will post this in the hardware forum also!!

I'm trying to fix a friends comp for him. When I try to install the appropriate modem driver, I get a notice whike installing that there are some .vxd files missing, and to please insert the Win 95 install disk in order to retrieve these files!! Being that he has Win 98 se installed, I figured I would try to retrieve these missing files off of the Win 98 install disk!! However they do not exist!!

I was able to download one of them (amos.vxd) and it took that one, but then it moves onto another missing file...(basic2.vxd)...and so on!! If I hit "Skip File"...then it goes on for 10 or 15 more missing files, some .dll's and a couple of .sys files!!

Like I said...He is running Windows 98 SE, so I really don't understand why it is requesting files from win 95!! And...I am using the appropriate driver file as far as it being for win 98 and not other os's!! As I stated before...I was able to retrieve the first missing file (amos.vxd) from the internet, but I can't seem to find any of the other .vxd files anywhere!! Obviousley I don't have a windows 95 cd, as not to many other people keep it anymore since it is so obsolete!! Which led me to believe I would be able to find them on the internet...Including the microsoft download site...but i've had NO SUCH LUCK!!!!

Is there someone who can help me as far as getting these so called missing files...or am I actually dealing with a more serious underlying problem??

I thought about just running a repair install from the 98 cd, but...that would fix anything being that the files don't exist on the cd!! I dowload a pc debugger program that scanned and found over 300 problems involving missing registry entries (which to my understanding is related to .vxd files), or however you might want to word it...but when it gave me the option to fix it...you had to buy a license!! So if you think that might fix the problem, maybe someone knows of a free debugger program that will fix registry entries????

    Thanks
    Roger

Your friend has a corrupt installation of a SoftK56 Data,Fax PCI Modem with the Rockwell Chipset.

    1. Uninstall the hardware. Right Click on Modem in Device Manager, Select Uninstall.

    2. I would tell you to manually remove the drivers from the system, but they aren't there.

    3. Power down the computer, remove the hardware, boot the system.

    4. Run either of these Microsoft RegClean 4.1a Build 7364.1 or RegCleaner 4.3.0.780

    5. Power down the system, reinstall the hardware, boot, install the drivers.

wellll-sounds like a pc that was upgraded from 95-98se w/ a update cd not the whole enchillada(in honor of cinco de mayo)

when it asks to find the file(popup) try browsing button as file just may have been misplaced a good spot ot look first is sys>windows>cabs?? i think (been awhile) or have you already done that --- or search for it in find under the start button

If you have tried those then go to the modems website and dl the drivers ???

    Thatswhatiknow!

Just a simple search for both the divers you named. Both belong to modems of that type. When ever W95/98 can't find drivers, during harware install, not on the system, not on the CD. That is almost always caused by a corrupt installation of Third-party Hardware Drivers. The drivers you are looking for come with the Hardware Installation disk. If the system won't use the drivers from the disk, then you have to remove the hardware, drivers, and clean the Registry. Before you can reinstall the hardware.

    Well...thanks for the input, Shadow...but unfortunately...that didn't do it!!

I did what you said, and then run the reg cleaner, and deleted the entry for the conexant modem, and then proceeded to reinstallafter rebooting, and I am still having the same issues!!

So I tried searching for the files like Gottaminit said and got past the first couple of files and now i'm stuck on the "turbovbf.vxd file....can't seem to locate that one!! I don't understand why the search option won't find a file unless you point it to the right folder within a folder!! I tried searching the hard drive and the win 98 cd a hundred times, and it wouldn't find the first couple of files!! But then after pointing the search feature directly to C:\system>windows>cab...it pulled it right out!! And furthermore....how can it exist on the harddrive and not be on the cd????

    Any more ideas??

    Thanks
    Roger

Try this driver file Conexant SoftK56 Drivers @ DriverGuide.com. When prompted for User/Password
enter driver2/all. The 'turbovbf.vxd' file is part of the driver file. Your install disk may be bad.

MS likes to include cabs within cabs quite often. Could be why you can't find it on the CD.

Thanks guys for the help....I figured it out!!

It was a corrupt dll file. After reading some info on the microsoft site...I found out there was a need to replace the rasapi32.dll file. So I did that and it fixed my problem!!

    Thanks again!!
