I Think My Dvd Drive Is Failing

I'm getting intermittent problems with it that seem to have no pattern. My computer doesn't boot up normally unless the DVD drive loads the disc inside. Lately, it's sometimes been having problems loading. When I turn the computer on, the drive makes an odd noise like it's continously trying but failing to load the disc, and I have to pop the drive out before the computer can boot up. Other times, when the computer is fully on, I can't play the DVD. Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) will say something like, "Cannot find DVD directory." And then other times, even when the DVD does play, if I pause it for a long time and then hit play again, the drive will start making odd noises again and the DVD might freeze, sometimes just for a moment and sometimes permanently so I have to hit stop, close the window, and try playing the disc all over again. Can I fix the problem or do I need to buy a new DVD drive?

    Hi Jesse

I've been having some similar problems with my optical drive.
    Read the comments here:

I suggest that you try the cd-rom.reg file that Eldon posted in that thread.
I've also tried disconnecting the power cable and replacing the data cable.
Your results may be better than mine.

What is your OS (Windows?) version?

    I'm using: Version 1703 (build 15063.674)

    Hi Jesse

    A few thoughts are..

    1. Enter BIOS and bypass the CD from the boot list, remove it as option and just keep HDD
    2. Unplug the CD from the motherboard and test without, get new CDR or check cables. unplug and re-plug in may just be loose connection.

Hi, guys. Sorry, by the time either of you replied, I'd already bought myself an external DVD drive. It's working fine. Thanks anyway.
