I think this is software related........

Im trying to format a partition on an old FJ pc. I've got the NT and Windows CD's that came with the machine (NT 4.0 and Windows 2000). When trying to format a new partition using the NT CD, I get an error message saying the drive is too big. Prior to this, there was a screen asking what size partition I wanted which automatically came up filled in with the whole drive size - 19532mb. There was no option to change this that I could find.

Not sure what other information you might need at this stage but thought I'd start with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

Any reason why you are not using the Windows 2000 CD to install ?

 

The drive where NT is installed (typically C) can ONLY be 4GB, no matter what type of format is done. It was a limitation with NT4.

There is a special procedure that can be followed to increase this to 7.8GB, but why bother? Go with 2000, it's a far better & more flexible operating system.

If you're sticking with NT, what you need to do is ensure that all the service packs are installed, then go into the disk manager, and take the rest of the space and make it a D drive.

 

OK guys, thanks for the last tip. I used the Win 2K CD and got there. I did what it said with the instructions about changing the BIOS settings for the boot sequence proir to install and then changing them back after install However, I had to restart the installation several times as it appeared to hang at different points but eventually completed the install. The problem now is that I cant get passed the screen with the Windows banner that says "starting up" coz it just stops. I can however boot in safe mode ok. Any more suggestions? Sorry if I'm being dumb about this.
