I thought I had solved this problem - I guess I didn't!

I am reopening a topic because a problem that I thought I had resolved is not.

A few weeks ago I bought a new DVD & put it in my DVD drive. It was the first time I had used the drive to watch a DVD in a few weeks. Fifteen seconds later the computer rebooted itself.

I am operating Windows XP Home, SP1 on a Gateway 510S with a Pentium 4 2.6 GHz processor and 496 MB of RAM. The machine contains a factory installed DVD player and an external DVD+RW on a USB cable. No hardware has changed in over a year.

I run Norton AntiVirus, AdAware, Spybot, A-squared, CCleaner & Trojan Hunter. I added A-squared & Trojan Hunter after the present problem began.

Once the computer rebooted, I was able to play the DVD, although it did get stuck at one point about a half-hour in, and I could not get past it, despite multiple tries.

System Restore did not solve the problem.

I booted to Safe Mode, opened Device Manager, uninstalled the internal DVD drive and rebooted. The computer recognized the “new” drive. I put the disk in the DVD drive and 15 seconds after I closed the drive bay, the screen went blank and the computer rebooted.

I then repeated the uninstall-install process and put in a different DVD. The computer again rebooted 15 seconds after I closed the drive bay.

I rebooted and put a different DVD in the second, external DVD drive. Fifteen seconds after I closed the drive bay, the computer again rebooted.

Disabling write caching on the DVD drive did not help.

I unchecked “reboot if system error" and put a DVD in the drive. Fifteen seconds after I closed the drive bay I got a “Blue Screen” which said:

    STOP – 0x00000027 (0xBAAD009C, 0xF7A4655C, 0xF7A4625C, 0xEE6DCD08)

    cdudf_xp.SYS_ Address EE6DC08 base at EE69C000 DateStamp 407c6bc2

Since the Blue Screen pointed to "cdudf" as a problem, and since "cdudf" is a part of Roxio, I uninstalled all Roxio components. I looked in Windows/system32/drivers and "cdudf" was gone.
After I rebooted the computer, I put a DVD in the drive, and the computer did not crash.

I thought I had solved the problem. All I really had was a “work-around”.

I used the DVD drive multiple times over the next week to make sure all was well – it certainly seemed to be.

Today I reinstalled a clean copy of Roxio 7, the same one I used for over a year with no problems. I put in a DVD and the problem reoccurred – the computer rebooted!

Since this copy of Roxio worked fine for me for over a year, this leaves me with only one possibility: something on my machine, recently added, and separate from the Roxio folder, causes a crash when a DVD is inserted, but only if Roxio is present on the computer. So what is it? Is it a malware not found by any detection program I have? Is it something I downloaded? I rarely add programs and can’t recall if I have added any since the last time the DVD worked normally. Did it arrive on my new DVD?

I need some advice as how to find what is causing a crash when a DVD is inserted when Roxio is present on my system.

This looks very much like a driver conflict. Possible the Roxio software has overwritten a system driver with an older version. Does the device manager show any exclamation marks?

As you say the DVD worked fine without Roxio installed it makes me wonder what part of Roxio you actually need?

Maybe you should just bite the bullet and stop using Roxio if that is the simplest workround.

I just checked Device Manager - no conflicts.

Someone elsewhere has suggested that I run sfc /scannow to see if Windows can find & replace a corrupted file somewhere. I think I may try that.

Of course, as you say, I could just stop using Roxio & rely entirely on Nero. I will if I can't find any solution. But I just hate to lose a function that I previously had, so I'll keep on trying for a while. And there is one function on Roxio that I can't find on Nero: it can blend several mp3 files into one single file.

Go to the Registry, and navigate to the following key,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Delete the upper and lower filters keys if they exist.

Reboot, but you may have to reinstall burning software.

Make sure you take the necessary precautions before working in the Registry.

If that fails, I would see if there is a firmware update. I don't normally suggest this to people, but you seem proficient enough.

Actually, I'm not proficient at all - much of what I described that I did was suggested to me by others. I know what editing the registry is but I've never attempted. I've always been confused about what you referred to as 'the necessary precautions'. I assume this means 'backing up the registry' but I'm not sure how to do that.

In the left hand side (in the Registry), you right-click the folder that you are working with, and select Export.

Save the file to your desktop (it will have a .reg extension) and you can call it anything you like. (ie I Love Insomniac.reg)

    Then follow the earlier instructions.

If something goes wrong, you can then start in Safe Mode, and double click on this file and it will re enter the details back to the Registry.

You could also create a Restore Point, and back up if you have the capability.

If you precisely follow the instructions, it's not dangerous or difficult.

It's also no guarantee, but it's worth a shot.

Sounds straightforward enough; either create a Restore Point or export the key to the desktop, or both.

    I just navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I have attached an image of the key to this post.

By the way, others have suggested to me that installing SP2 would possibly solve this problem. I did. It didn't. But it does take a little longer for my desktop to come up now.

Something has backed up the original Lower and Upper Filters keys and replaced them.

That's why you have LowerFilters.Bak and several UpperFilter.Bak etc, although I can't read the entire entry in the screenshot.

Bak is used by programs to backup files when they replace them.

After backing up or whatever, try deleting both LowerFilters and LowerFilter.Bak, then do the same for Upper.

I don't know what has caused this and never seen it before, but it's worth a try.

Removing Roxio may also help as it's been known to screw the Registry.

Doing something new (for me) like altering the Registry sounds like a task best left for the weekend.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I do know that the "InCD" referred to in one of the keys is part of Nero, the other audiovisual program.

InCD is the packet writing module of Nero. (same as Roxio's Direct CD, that XP also has by default)

Packet Writing lets you use a CD like a big floppy, but it's problematic.

I always suggest to people to uninstall it. or at least not have it running in the background. (XP on it's own allows packet writing anyway as I stated, so no need for two unless you require advanced features)

It also locks the drive so you cannot use eject until it's closed.

Don't use it unless you are well versed in it's functions.

How would I go about uninstalling InCD if I chose to?
I don't see an entry in Add-Remove Programs.

It's a module of Nero, so when you go to uninstall Nero, it will give you the option to modify or remove it and leave the other modules behind.

If for some reason you don't have a Nero entry in Add/Remove, look in your Start Menu.

OK - when I reinstall Nero I'll then uninstall the InCD (unless there is an option on install to not install InCD).

Yes there is an option to not install InCD or any Nero Module.
