Can I still download music from the net if I install Itunes for an Ipod?

Yes, itunes it just the apple recommended tool to sync tunes to an ipod. There are other methods but thats the best way I have heard to put music on an ipod.

someone told me that Itunes can scan your computer and can tell if you downloaded music "illegally" and can report that info back to apple. It sounds far fetched to me, but I wanted to double check to make sure.

Itunes can scan your computer to build a "library" but i hadn't seen/heard of it being able to determine how music was obtained. I do wanna say be very careful with p2p apps as most can cause spyware/virus issues but its your call.

In answer to your first post Yes.

In answer to your second. I doubt very much that ITunes can determine whether music from other sources is legal or not although, yes it does scan your hard drive for music for it's library.

Finally, not sure why you put illegally in speech marks, either it's free, purchased or illegal. If it's a band that you can buy on the high street and you find it free anywhere other than the bands website then it's almost guarenteed illegal.

My solution, don't steal music. Amazon it and buy it second hand, if you own an original CD then you have it legally (and at £2-5 a CD I don't believe anyone can't afford it).

I put illegal in quotes because I don't believe that it should be illegal to donwload. If it is illegal then it shouldn't be available on a website (p2p or not). If it is illegal shut the sites down, don't go after the little guys.

I certainly agree with taking away the cause (major suppliers, truly criminal or 'free the data' mentality).

I've got to say though, using P2P networks is mostly just a great way to pick up viruses and get on someones database of illegal downloaders, unlikely to be an issue unless you're one of the top 5% of downloaders but I'd still rather not myself.

Suppose the other thing to note is that what you personally believe is irrelevant. In the unlikely case of you ending up in court saying that is going to guarantee a conviction... Still, I'm not trying to pick a fight and I agree with your last post (intellectually), shame it doesn't work like that (legally).
