    That right there makes it perfectly plain that you can't accomplish what you need for the job without going to school. Especially if you're starting with no knowledge or experience in the first place.
    This is another big one. I know this is just a message board, but your post has a couple of glaring errors in it.

    the job you 'want' won't come from the internet. you'll need to go to school. i am. sure, i've worked for the pc industry without a degree or certifications, but i can't support a family on that pay. so school it is.

    Funny, I have a job where I use computers, and I wish I had a job where I work on cars.

    Anyway, what they said. I've got a Associates in Electronic Engineering, 8 years PC troubleshooting and repair experience and am A+ certified. I am currently working on another degree, this time in Computer Network Technology because if I were out there looking right now, I don't think my combined experience would count for all that much without something like a substantial, current degree.

    wow, sound like you know your stuff. I guess you all are right need to go to school, but whick one and what do I need to learn. I was looking into what I like. And I guess I have to learn about shell scripting and php. So what courses would I have to take. I also like car,lol. but I deviated from what I was saying, and thanks for all your input. Also can you tell me what the errors were that were glaring at you.

    I am in school for Bachelors in Computer Science, you Need to go school but to be good at your job you gotta have a real passion. I spend way more time on computers at home then I do at school, if you wait and just go to school for your knowledge you will not be successful. Theres plenty of 30 year olds with degree's I have shown up, school knowledge is great, but if your gonna be good you gotta do more than that.

    I would suggest a job at a small company first, I have one right now and I am getting invaluable experiance in programming, networking, T1's and phone systems.

    Biggest thing to remember is google is your friend, one problem with people is when they cant find an answer they dont know what to do or keep trying stupid stuff

    IE : I know nothing of macs, we had a second network tech to take up my extra work and he was on a job 8 freakin hours and could not get a mac to map drives to an old nt4 server, I did his job in a half hour after my boss called me out by using google. Needless to say he ended up loosing his job (He lied about his experience, said he knew all about stuff he was clueless about)

    Most of the time you arent going to know the answer, its gonna be something you never antipacitated or anything you know about. What makes a good computer guy is knowing how to find the answers you do not know. Then telling your boss of course you knew it :)

    Your first post:
    I found this job but since Im not to well verse in computer knowlegde I was wondering if you guys can help me by telling me what I should do to meet the requirments. Like what to learn and can I do it without going to a school.

    Im = I'm
    to = too
    verse = versed
    knowlegde - knowledge (probably a typo, but still there)
    requirments = requirements

    Your second post:
    wow, sound like you know your stuff. I guess you all are right need to go to school, but whick one and what do I need to learn. I was looking into what I like. And I guess I have to learn about shell scripting and php. So what courses would I have to take. I also like car,lol. but I deviated from what I was saying, and thanks for all your input.

    wow = Wow (capitalization at the beginning of a sentence)
    I guess you all are right need to.... = I guess you all are right, I need to go to school...
    whick = which
    So what courses would I have to take. = a question, use a ? instead of a .
    I also like car,lol = I also like cars, lol
    but I deviated = But (capitalization again)
    ...were glaring at you. = a question again, so ? instead of .

    As I said above, I realize this is an internet forum. But since one of the things they are looking for is "excellent written and verbal communication", it's something to think about.

    Edit:
    I am not trying to be harsh, or to make you feel bad...I'm just pointing out something that will be a factor in your job hunting regardless of the field you choose.

    Yes, you will need to figure out how much time and effort you want to put into your venture. Best to start out as a hobby/small business, then see how you go. i.m.o.

    Worked for me, anyway.

    Thanks Sgt. Tibbs, I did make a lot of mistake. Mostly because I was trying to type to fast and no looking over at what I had written. Also I didn't take any offence to what you said. If I were to get offended everytime someone corrected me I don't think I would make it very far. Instead I learned from what you said, and thanks for the post. Hopefully this post has less mistakes.

    I've had the pleasure (injecting sarcasm here) to hire and/or work with people with self-taught computer 'skills' and those whose only education are the quickie 1-2 year certifications. Generally these people lack the analytical skills and roundness of education that comes with a bachelors or masters degree.

    Sure they can build a computer and install and maintain software, but what they lack are the problem solving skills. (Most any kid just out of school these days have the same skills and are willing to do your job for less money) Ask them to come up with a solution to a business need and they're at a loss.

    Another problem with these short cuts is they don't contribute anything towards literacy. In these days of quickie email-in-lieu-of-conversation writing skills have deteriorated. They become permanent reminders of how well a person thinks and speaks.

    I concur, no task is too small to forget the details. Bad habits will stick if practiced a long time, just as easy as good habits will stick.

    One thing I have learned over the years is that all the degrees don't automatically make you the best. I worked with a TV repair tech who had no formal education in electronics. Best troubleshooter around with anything electric. He started in radio before television, his passion is what set him apart from the rest.

    Hang with those who share the passion and you will pick it up fast, and formal schooling is a great place to meet others with the same passions.

    Either get the degree or stick it out like us hardcore techies and get 15 years of experience. either way you end up in the same position.

    Hate to say this, but that is a two way road. There are droves of people coming out of college that don't know shit.

    Thanks for all you advice, hopefully sometime soon I will be in college, but in the mean time in between time, I'll learn as much as I can thru self teaching and help from others. I do have problem solving skills, My last job I was incharge of a small group of 7. I was a the supervisor, many problem arise and it not hard if you know what your doing. So when I complete my college along with experience I think I will be good.

    Amen to that. A mixture of college and real world experience is ideal, IMO.
    To communicate well, some formal education is essential. To work on computers, practical experience is invaluable. I have seen a lot of university educated idiots - and not just computer idiots.

    I totally agree. . ..there are two people up for the same job, one with yers of experiance and the other with a "formal" education
    the college guy gets it. . and ends up standing there with his thumb up his butt
    the other guy gets it . . and he does what needs to be done
    but you need to start somewhere, wisest to be in school and working in your current field of study(not parting)

    its not what you know, its how you know how to use what you know
