I lent my laptop to an acquaintance because he wanted to write his CV. When I got it back, many settings were changed that I don't know or remember how to change back the way I want. For example, now I have to click my profile icon before windows starts or when it goes into screen saver mode - how annoying and time wasting.

But worse than that, every time I use Ms Office, the spell checker complains about a lot of words - because someone has installed a custom French dictionary to which it defaults all the time. I have my language settings as UK English and despite changing the dictionary to UK one, after each words it changed back to the French one. The only way I could get rid of it, was first to delete the English dictionary - including all the special words standard dictionary doesn't recognise. Only then I could delete the French one! :cry

So, now I have at least the standard dictionary but I cannot add new words to it, which is no use to me. How can I get a custom English dictionary into my laptop? I find that being able to add words is the best thing about a dictionary.

I would also appreciate if someone knows a link to instructions how to get rid of the start-up profile screen, as I find it only a nuisance, since there is only me using it.

And one more thing. I would like to find out how to prevent any settings being changed without my consent, e.g. by password protecting them - without having to create visitor profiles etc for the occasional third party.

If you decide to lend a computer to anyone, make an image before you send it off. When you get it back, restore from the image. I do this. Then I simply run all the updates to windows and my security programs and I'm back in business with no trace of what the other person did on the computer.

Errm, I don't know how to do that... Do I need an external drive or something?

The problem in this country is that all hardware is very expensive and it is unlikely that one can find anything but counterfeits - that run a high risk of failing after a month of so... A manager of a company told proudly that he bought good quality products for staff Christmas raffle: the DVD-player he had bought as a star price was still working a year later!

Anyway, I got reminded about another problem. Today someone wanted to copy a You-tube video I have downloaded. But as soon as he put the flash drive in, AVG found a virus in a recycler: after deleting it, the drive won't work at all. It has "destroyed" one of my flash drives the same way. Any ideas of how to get the flash drive working again or at least how to get the data from the drive? Sorry, nothing to do with the original question, I just didn't know if it was worth to start a new thread for that.
