I want to start over...please help

I have tried everything I can think of to get an old computer of mine working. It was originally operating on win95 but I upgraded to win98. It was working fine when I gave it to my nephew and I don't know what he did to it. I just want to start over. I have tried setting up win 98 again but keep getting a command interpreter error. I looked all over the net to try and fix this problem. Then I got the bright idea to try and use an old boot disk that I had from win95, then I got a error saying if I had HPFS or NTPS on my drive I needed to create a dos boot partition. This is getting way too deep for me. Is there any way I can just dump everything and start over? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

If you have a Win98 boot disk, start from that. Might be the disk is partitioned in FAT32 and Windows 95 takes FAT16. That may be the reason you get the partition errors. So better try booting from a Windows 98 boot disk.

 

I don't think I have a 98 boot disk. Is there a way I could make one on this computer?

Well, I tried the 98 boot disk and I got these errors:
Himem.sys, dblbuff.sys & ifshlp.sys is missing or corrupted and it is asking me to type the command interpreter. I'm back where I started.

 

Ok.. Boot the system through the Win98 Setup disk. It has an option to go into the command prompt. Start from there.

 

I did that and got the command interpreter error again.

 

Format the drive with the boot disk. This way you will start fresh.

 

How do I do that?

I got my puter back up and running! I want to thank you all for the help! Woo Hoo, I guess I'm really needing some classes on how to diagnose my puter and how to fix them but with this site I couldn't have doneit. Thanks Again!!!
