Iam using a Dell computer 3-4 years old atleast. Its a windows XP

What I want to do is clean the computer up, then remove some old stuff, and try to get it up to better spead without ruining my gf computer (sense Iam doing it behind her

Also sorry for long post: but I got more stuff to ask I got tons of folder and misc folders I have no Idea what they are in my computer and so on and so on after that... and I just dont want to delete folder after folder. And for my things in the taskmanager I dont know I know the avg pops up and I close it out each time. But I cant seem to find how to disable it on starting up the computer. Ive search startup and nothing there... or anywhere.

Another question is clearing up destop/startmenu/bad folders going to make computer faster?

After I do this I will start with the second step on that link and so on. Also Ive had many things downloaded and suppose to be deleted .. and Ive had issues with firewall mixing wrong and so I just dont have 1 on atm. So I need to learn how to get one and keep just one on the computer.. and make it faster and safer..

This will help your machine alot,then proceed with the other steps.

Other than that the machine does not look to bad you will be pleasantly surprised at the increase in speed.

 

Thanks for reply more is welcome! And another question is - I know that having many programs running at same time can slow stuff down. I press ctrl alt dlt and I look and see a list of stuff running.. And I see some that are bigger like firefox and explorer.. even tho there not open.. anyways if I take the stuff off the destop and just use "start and click programs then click firefox to open it from there" will it make it faster or no just keep stuff on destop. And how can I make sure stuff isnt running at times that I dont want it too. Another thing is Ive been checking out some stickys and some other things, and I see suggestions by the people that run this place and it says do this and that with this program download but yet the download link title kinda says outdated like year something else... are these stickys updated alot or no and I should ask to download a newer version of programs?

Yes having too many background d tasks can slow down a pc considerably
Many of the progs you are seeing are probably loading on startup (ccleaner allows you to edit this)
Alot of the stickies are dated on when they were first posted.. The owners/mods here do an incredible job of keeping it all updated and running beautifully..

Go try that ccleaner and you will be happy (reading the directions first)

No I havn't done anything yet. I was getting people views and then I was going to run the ccleaner and then do the steps on the maintaince section.

 

I dont know why I keep getting no edit button but I got a quetion. I want to know what I can do to delete those files that I listed at the beggining (they were some games I think and they say they had an error or something for each one) I went into safe mode and couldnt get rid of and it said same errors. So any help with those before I move on and any other things I can remove from my computer add/remove list?

 

Without reading every word of this thread, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but........

AVG 7.5 is DEAD! It died last year. The FREE version died in August and the full retail version died in December. So remove it.
Then download the AVG 8.0 FREE version and install it.
That will give you GOOD AV protection while you're deciding what to do with all the rest of those programs.

All of your questions can be solved (from reg editing to cleaning uneccesary programs) by reading/running CCleaner.... honest Not a shill I just use it cause it works....
First steps first then you can worry about uninstalling anything leftover

 

So running the ccleaner will fixed those messed up files and get rid of them? These are what Iam talking about on my add/remove but they wont go away cause these issues... and the other 2 are just weird and I dont know what they are.

Another question is defrag - I know computers got it, but I read somewhere to download a program and its just like defrag but it will defrag everything... Does defrag on computer not work good enough for what?

I would replace the Windows firewall and defragger with some good third party programs. My personal favorites( and everybody has their own) is Comodo firewall and UltimateDefrag. Both are better than their Windows counterparts.

 

Alright this is going to be long and you will struggle reading:cry But stay with me for few minutes. Any suggestions and help is good thanks in advance.

I numerous misc folders and files of sorts. I don't know what they do or what there used for. I hope what I did will also help clean those out!

Anyways I downloaded CCleaner and I downloaded the english version I open it-analyzed the c drive-then I fixed all items. I saved each page of "mess up files and locations" to my destop for if I need to show you guys or need help with mistake. Anyways I also clicked YES to save me a back up to each fix. And those are on my destop too (for if I mess up my computer maybe you guys can help me go back to them) Do I have to keep these saves on destop or delete them? If I have keep does it take up alot of space for 3 back ups? Anyways with the ccleaner "some stuff couldn't be fixed due to some wrong installer or uninstaller I dont know... SO hopefully its okay.

Next I downloaded A "frag cleaner or whatever its called" I got these links from this http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 and at the bottom I downloaded the frag program - http://majorgeeks.com/IObit_SmartDefrag_d5318.html anyways I clicked analyzed, then when it was done it open a window saying what files are mess up. Anyways at the bottom it said (recommended fast optimize) whatever that means.. so I close out.. see a tab (which u can change) and it says "fast optimize or deep optimize w/e that means too... and then "defrag only" I choosed this one and then I clicked start. Then it fixed all selected things. I ran this 3-4 times each time I fixed. Some stuff couldnt be fixed for whatever reasons. Also Do I have to go do fast optimize or the deep one? Or did I do right.. Also I clicked all boxes to search so iam okay with the search part atleast.

After this I restarted computer.

Then I downloaded off this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 at the bottom again.. http://majorgeeks.com/Diskeeper_Lite_d1207.html I downloaded that. Once I open it I didn't do anything cept analyze button at top - then clicked defrag. It took forever and it said I had an error " had an error with snap in"" please restart MMC" And so I clicked the tab that said ignore it and keep going. So it did and I waited.

So after all this I got my logs to show what got fixed on these defrags and ccleaner.

I saved the registry about 3-4 times onto the destop. Do I need to keep these there or delete them?

Another thing is I will be uninstalling and removing these defrags from computer and I I will be downloading the new Avg 8 that was posted to me.

Also I think spybot and destroy was a good spyware or w/e it removed.. and I was wondering for link of the newest version of that?

Also Iam asking what should I stick on my computer.
1. I dont know if I have a firewall - and if I do how I find it? Or w/e Also I dont know how to use one if I had one.

2. I Want some program for virus and spyware. But Iam affraid if I leave these on each time I log onto the computer it slow it down while searching and loading games I play. Is this true it slow it down while on all the time? If so I just do what I always did and keep downloading programs when needed...

3. I only know of spybot n destroy and avg for stuff. And now ccleaner. But What programs and sutff do you think I need to protect my computer.

Anyone got ideas on what to download on my computer to keep it safe? I downloaded avg 8 and iam thinking of spybot and destroy sense I used it before and I dont know anything about firewall programs... Also my question is Having all these on and open while iam on the computer will slow it down... right? How we get it to where it wont.

SAS and MalwareBytes I do not have starting at startup, but as on demand.
SpywareBlaster and Guard do start at startup,as does WinPatrol, but run in the background. I do not see any performance slowdown.
Besides, which would you rather have, a slightly slower machine or one at a dead stop.

Iam going to read those links. Iam just worried of downloading programs and slowing the computer, its happen on my old computer and I just end up buying new ones. And with economy stinking I dont got it... So Imma read these links. For now. How does a firewall work and its program? I Had one and I had to change settings of sorts, and I didn't ever understand it so I just disable it.

 

On avg 8 link do I have to download the updates on it myself? And if so how I put them into my avg? I have xp windows.

 

I also got another question with avg8 say i got a virus or trojan and it says it was healed -which is deleted. And say I got a trojan or a virus and it said it was put to fault (does this mean its still a virus active and hurting my pc while in the fault) I dont get why sometime it deletes and sometime it puts into fault and sometime it heals... Iam affraid it heals and keeps a bad thing, iam affraid it deletes but (really doesnt delete it), iam affraid of it being put into fault (and it still hurting my computer) I dont understand this maybe an its really fixing the things.. can u explain please. I havnt cleaned the dust. I recently add/remove, I did ccleaner, I ran avg 8 - found tracking cookies (and there just warned "whatever this means")and 1 was heal.. so Kinda weird. Also my computer has been losing internet connection and being kinda gay sense then(hopefully its not from these) anyways I will be tring to find spybot new version and trying it soon. But for now thats all I ve done. Oh yea I also downloaded 2 defrags (like I listed in this thread) and did them and now uninstalled em.
