IBM Aptiva win 98 32mb ram

damn it ook lik e 5 minutes to get to this page.

I was trying to download a firewall (sygate personal firewall) When it asked to save to a disk or open from here, since I don't have a disk I opened from the site, it took about 2 min to download but once it was downloaded no install program ran, can anyone help me out, what happen????

also can I speed this machine up without having to buy hardware. I downloaded max mem, and I have more momory free but it's only a little bit, and its still running slow,

And lastly what's a good download manager, and will this computer be able to handle all the downloads?

Save to disk means you save to your hard drive. Try that, unless your hard drive is so full you can't save to it. If it is too full, then that is why it's slow, and you need to start cleaning!

About it being slow... Make sure you defrag regularly. And when I have an old machine that is getting slow, I usually reinstall the system with a clean install, and then make sure I install a minimum of stuff on it, so that it runs smoother.

I've used CuteFTP as a download manager. Most people I've talked to say they love it. I use it, but I can't say I'm that thrilled about it. But it works.

 

I took off some of the things,(turned off options that you use; that take up MB) and my resouce went from 60% to 73%, the pc still runs slow. So that didn't do anything, also I'm using internet explorer, not sure what version, but for some reason a netscape wndow poped up and loaded up, it's happened before I just close it but why does that happen? Also need a pop up blocker, whats a good one that takes up little space? So do you think it would be to much to download for this pc. What's a system reinstall, this clean reinstall you were talking about, and how can I do that? thanks for the info on the download.

 

I did the download and saved it to the c drive, but when I look at the icon it looks like a page with lines and a A on the lower right corner. When I click on it the promt that a explore page will open shows up but nothing opens. I'm confused as to what has happened, I also think this pc need a proggram that unzips compressed files. but how do I get that?

 

Winzip is a free unzipper, download the evaluation version.

With clean install I mean format the harddrive and install everything from scratch. That means loosing everything you have on it, unless you can take backups. It can be a bit tricky to do this if you've never done anything like it before though. Especially on win 95 if that is your operating system, then you need to make sure you have all the drivers (software) for modem, mouse etc.

Are you sure you have only 32 MB ram? That sounds VERY little. Could you do the following. Rightclick "My Computer" and select "Properties". There you should see what ram you have, what cpu and what size the hard drive is. Because if it really is 32 mb, then there isn't much you can do... Todays programs will slow down a computer like that very much.

Is it considerably slower now than it used to be a little while ago? Have you noticed a considerable drop in performance lately? Then it could be spyware.

I don't have a separate popup blocker, and don't know what is good I'm afraid.

It was real extremly slow earliar, but now it's not as slow, so I guess it's a little better but still slow, have to wait for a minute or two for a window to open, do you know anything about the programs I downloaded, that the icon looks like a page with lines and a "A" on the lower right hand corner?
the other programs I downloaded like a anit virus one are good but the firewall one isn't.

I don't know what that icons are for, sorry! And I haven't used either that antivirus or that firewall. I've used Zonealarm and I was very satisfied with it.

 

I found the book for Windows 95 and I was reading though it seeing if I can help this thing move faster. And I found the icon. This is the definition for it:
"A document that was created with WordPad, text editor this is included with windows". Still not sure what it is but why would I get these icons when I download and saved to my drive C. So what do you think about the computer stats I posted earliar? 32 MB of RAM. About the system reinstall, I dont think I have the disk to put the info back on, this is an American computer but I'm using it in Japan and it needs special software called "3com" I think, to use/I'm using cable connection. Or is 3com the the net company, well don't know at the moment but I'm sure if I do the sys reinstall I can't get the 3com thing back. What can you tell me about error messages. I tried to update my msm and when if finally downloaded about 15 to 20 minutes later, I go this message, "Command line Option Syntax error. type Command /? for help" do you know what it means?

 

If you don't have ALL disks with drivers and a disk with Win 95 on, don't think about reinstalling.

The ram should be enough for win 95, as long as you don't install too much other stuff on it!

 

And I made a mistake... CuteFTP is not what I meant to recommend, I was thinking about FlashGet. Sorry about that, I think my head is not on straight today!

but Im still working with it to see how it work and get a better understanding of computers.

 

Darn, ok I don't have the lab top now, back to using this iba aptiva with win 95 32 mb of ram and a lot of issuse,
ok my new issue. i want to listen to music but for some reason it doesn't play my cd. This program pops up called win amp, it has the tracks on it but nothing plays, and I still wish for this pc to move faster.

 

Man I'm getting better at this fixing my pc, well not really. I uninstalled that wimamp, and foound another program that was already in the comp. The only thing is that is doesn't run when I put the cd in I have to load the program, can this be fixed? And as if I'm cursed to run into more comp issuse, I emptied my trash can and all of a sudden, I can open programs,, it say it can't find SirC32.exe.
This program is needed for opening files of type 'Application'.
camn anyone help me with this?

Sometimes the best and simplest way to Kill bad stuff is to just do complete reinstall.

I have an old IBM Aptiva 2153 333mhz, it's actually a good old pc, I added some memory & OC alittle.
I have 256mb pc133 running at 100fsb & the cpu upped the fsb by switches on the mobo from 95 to 100 fsb which makes the cpu run at 350mhz.
I run W2K OS & NTFS file sys.
Very stable and never freeses up, when I ran 98se it would lock up all the time.
It run's a half dozen anti spyware & anti virus programs firewall etc.
I use this PC to download stuff and experiment with various programs and apps.

Anyway, If your interested I have about 1/2 dozen sticks of memory that will run in your rig, I'd sell some, at a good price, too ya.

I have a question. Will the system reinstall mess up any hardware installed after the pc was bought? And can you give me a step by step process on how to do a reinstall on this pc. I have a IBM Aptiva Product Recovery cd, a diagnostics and utillitiess cd-rom, a etherDisk, that the 3com.

I have had litlte trouble from it , you can set it up to dl automatically I think and also drop and drag to it.

I need help seems I'm running a really old internet explorer. lol seeing as this pc is over 10 years old, well it seems I can't find anything becasue when I tried to use yahoo to search it was all whacked, it looked like everything got smashed together at the top of the screen. I need to update this pc or else my internet experience will suck. Man I format it faster but more problems...lol.. its a curse or I need to learn more and it would have been goot to search and download to a disk, but I have no disk, so that suck, anyway could use the help.
