I don't know if any one will know something like this, but I have an old IBM Thinkpad T40p laptop and the power adapter for it is really starting to die. One time, though I accidentally plugged in another adapter I had for my netbook and it seemed to work without a problem.

As far as I can tell the only difference between the two adapters is the output voltage, the output for the proper adapter is 16V but the output for this other (netbook) one is 20V. Do you think it would be a problem to use this new 20V adapter? Or do you know if there's somewhere I can look to find out?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes. Do not use higher voltage. You will slowly cook the inside of your laptop.
Get a universal that allows you to select the proper voltage. If one adapter worked, we'd all buy a really large voltage adapter with different connectors and use it for all devices. ;) How simple that would be. :-D

You can use something rated with higher Amps. That simply recharges the device faster. Do not use lower amps because then the notebook/netbook will not recharge the battery while you are using a lower amp adapter. The device will need to be turned off to recharge the battery.
