IBm Thinkpad key problem

    Help, I have a IBM thinkpad. Right now I have the computer on and I have a sort of side way z in a circle lighted green and a black screen. What can I do to get my computer running, what did I do to put it in this state. Prior to this the computer was running great, of course I did not know what all the function keys and I may have accidently done something wrong, I just don;t know what!!!!

    This is a new one :(
    What happens if you hit the Access IBM button on boot. Does it come up to a recovery console? You can restore/recover etc from here. But like Laura says probably hardware. Is it booting to the strange desktop??
