   When I first installed XP Pro my desktop icons loaded almost instantaneously
   when I logged on. They now seem to take an inordinate amount of time. Why?

   I'd be looking for programs loading at startup which are taking up memory as they load. Could be spyware/adware and could be legit. Check what is loading at startup including programs in your computer looking for updates.

   Its worth trying to repair the icon cache by using TweakUI for XP, install the app I will link below and choose repair from the menu then choose Rebuild Icons > Repair Now

   Install the TweakUI module.
