icon problem

Hi could someone help me please i am running windows xp home edition and just recentely all my program icons on the desktop and in the programs in the start up menu all have the internet explorer icon and when i click on them they open the internet explorer page as though it was connecting to the internet and then the page disappears.The only way i can open the program is to go the program files in my computer and go to the actually program and open it from there.Can someone help me please.

 

Try resetting the icon cache

Right click an empty area of your Desktop

Properties > Appearance > Advanced

Item, drop down menu, click Icon

Write down # next to icon down, then use up/down arrows to change the number displayed a little.

Click Ok

Now do same again and put the # you wrote down in same box (change it back)

Click Ok

If that does not work, please post back. Also please let us know if you added any software, changed anything, gotten any error messages or virus warnings lately.

 

Hi no that did not work.No i haven't added new software or changed anything I recentley had a lot of spyware and virsus on the computer but i got rid of them all with spysweeper.Could there be some virus or something still in one of the programs?

You may be able to use this. Go to repair tab and then repair icons.

If you think this is related to the malware problem you had then you might make a new post in the malware removal section. chaslang and Timw are excellent at identifying malware related issues. Be sure and read the READ AND RUN ME FIRST thread before posting. There is info. there they will need for you to give them. Good luck.

 

I would start the Read/Run here as Evilfantasy suggested, just so you don't lose any time. It could be caused my malware. Please follow steps in order posted so you don't have to repeat steps.

Great! All my pdf documents were showing the generic icon after I installed Acrobat 8.0. I used your suggestion and now they are back to normal!! Thank you very much.
