icons changed to IE

I have a HP pavilion running Windows XP. I did a disc defrag yesterday and most icons came back as IE icons. Can I get the icons back? It seems as the downloaded programs such as: a couple paid for games and MSN, Ad-Aware SE are there but, Google and NewYork Yankees and all other Create Shortcut icons are now IE.

Windows ME used to do something similar
all I used to do was search for the file 'shelliconcache' -(which had become corrupted) and deleted it
and after a restart everything was fine, windows recompiled the file and all icons were restored to how they used to be.

With windows XP, I believe the file is just called 'iconcache'
but
Do not delete it, without getting someone to confirm this info - either on this forum or by searching online for 'iconcache'

Although if you just delete it to the recycle bin, you should be able to restore it later.
