I use firefox 5.0 and windows XP on the desktop computer Dell XPS 410 . I noticed on certain websites, the Icons for the browser links are missing. I have to move my cursor around to find them. When I see the pointing hand I know I found a link.
I have tried internet explorer 8, and I get the same problem.

Some one told me I need to install Adobe Flash Player. I done that, and I still have the problem.

I also have a laptop, and it has no problem displaying the Icons. So I know they are there.

Give a website and a missing icon so I can try and determine what is missing on FF 3.5.5. We aren't up to FF v5 yet. ;)

Website www.shopshield.net. All the icons at the top are not showing. One of the links at top right is the apply link. [that is to apply for the service.]:confused

    HI,

Thanks for your reply. I am glad you see the links. I do not see those links when I use Firefox. The links I am referring to are "Home" "free trial" "how we protect You" etc. So my question is what is wrong with my settings, that I do not see them?

    Greetings, bill071...

    Interesting problem...

I'm on a mchine that can't run FF at the moment, but here are a couple of ideas: could this be a link color thing? The fact that the 'hand' shows up means the a-link is there, but maybe your link color settings are the same as the background...

If it's not a specific browser problem, maybe something is somehow planting a style sheet...try this: click View, Page Source (or right-click on the page and select View Page Source) - see if there are any weird CSS color entries in the head of the document...

    Just grabbin' at straws...

i'm under XP and FF 3.5.5 and i DO see them. they don't appear to be java links so has me stumped, too...unless you have the NoScript addon & it's interfering (only a guess cuz i don't have that addon, either).

like Caliban mentioned, regarding link/hover color...also check to see that you aren't overriding the website's font style with what you've chosen.

FF theme addon Personas can really mess up how links appear (or don't appear at all). i tried it & it really did mess with some link colors (made them invisible). change your Persona theme to see if that cures it; you can always make your own theme.

So you meant links not icons. That is an entirely different matter.

Do you see the words but can't click to get a hotlink or are the words missing?

I run noscript so we can rule that out as creating the problem.

Open your FF Options (found under the Tools menu, in windows under the Edit menu in linux) and click on the Content tab.
At the top, all 4 items are checked. Under fonts and color, click the Advanced button and post what you have or if the two computers are close to each other, compare the items on the working computer to the items on the non-working computer and adjust what needs to be adjusted.

Her is the HTML source. I do see scripts and .css files. I don't know enough about this to know if there are any problems with this code.

I do not see run a noscript add-on. My font colors and background are different. I do not run linux, I am running Firefox.

The words are missing, but the links are there. By moving my cursor, I can find the links.

Change the font and background settings on the non-working computer to match the working one.

I did not mention looking at that. I pointed you only to the tab marked Content. Forget worrying about the other 6 choices and concentrate just on content entries.

If you are using a font that this particular page doesn't use, that might be why the words are not visible to you.

I did...there are obviously browser-specific lines in the HTML for that page ("if lte IE 6"), which is probably not the problem, and there is also a link to a style sheet ("css/index.css"), which, from what I can tell, contains nothing that could cause this problem...

There are, however, links to javascript files that are handling the drop-down menus, and this could be the source of the trouble, Bill, if somewhing is awry in your Firefox java-handling...

Sorry about the css - I did not see you mention that Caliban.
I have noscript running; javascript is turned off and I still see what I posted above so I don't think it is a javascript off or on problem.

No problem, plodr - just didn't want to get lost in the shuffle...

I swear, I've seen this type of problem before, but I cannot seem to remember the solution...strange...

Bill, if you do happen to stumble across a fix, I sure would like for you to share the info...
