I run Windows 7 Home, 64 bit. What else do you need to give an evaluation?

    Do some basic system maintenance.
Run CCleaner > Cleaner in its default settings
Run sfc /scannow to check system files are not corrupt
Run ChkDsk to see if there are any problems with the hard drive
Check your start ups at boot to see if there are unneeded ones
Check Windows Update that your system is fully up to date

Be aware that the CCleaner default settings will delete the icon cache, thus slowing down the display of icons until fresh ones have been created. Auto-running of CCleaner at boot might be the cause of the icons being slow to load.

Great - can you please identify which checked box/es in the default settings in CCleaner Windows Explorer, System and Advanced the OP should uncheck?
    Thanks!

Why don't you do as I did a short time ago, test the default settings of the software before making a suggestion?

I can't find the things to uncheck and I don't have any problem using CCleaner BUT I thought you posted about it here to help. No worries. I made a silly mistake.

    You obviously overlooked the above.

CCleaner might already be installed and is the culprit.

Sure, I made some effort earlier, saves you from having to bother testing anything, look for the words Thumbnail cache - uncheck it, if CCleaner is running at boot, work through the Options tab to prevent it. Reboot, test:

As I thought no checked boxes to uncheck.
Auto running at boot to allow active monitoring doesn't delete anything.
I must just have 4 very strange systems running CCleaner that doesn't create the problems shown in this thread, or the now 40+ that I help maintain.
I'll have to post on Piriform forums about it.

Scannow found some files that it could not fix.
Was unable to view scannow log. C:\windows\logs\CBS\cbs.log..............................................ACCESS DENIED

I tweaked CCCleaner to leave stuff that I wanted, as well as adding other programs that were not included for analysis. I left cookies and MRU alone since I selectively get rid of this periodically.

Condition not improved....................I only need to go through startup programs. Where do I find them. Give me advice on what I can disable, etc. Where do I look.

I remember sometghing abbout tweaking the icon cache entry in the registry. How about it?

PS: I uninstalled CCCleaner after the scan/cleanup, so as to avoid it's automatic "monitoring" service. Don't need it cause i always clean the computer files as routine maintenance.

I also get a sound during boot, shortly after Windows 7 starts, and desktop appears. You will find sound as "Windows Hardware Fail.wav". Check it in Control Panel/Sound/Sounds/Windows Default/Device Failed To Connect.

    I opened CMD and pasted
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
but FINDSTR cannot open the logfile.

    Disregard above post.
After I opened CMD and pasted
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

sfcdetails.txt has nothing in it! It's blank

If I could open this and find the corrupted item, I'd replace it using the instructions you gave me in the link.

A 4 card reader which show as Local Discs F G and H. The 4th one does not show up in "my computer" so one is not being seen.

You probably need to run sfc /scannow again but it must be run using an ADMINISTRATOR command prompt. It wont run correctly otherwise. The guide explains how to do that.

  17. Joe Ciaravino

    Yes, I did that.

Then it will produce an easy to read text document to your desktop.

It did...but like I said, the document was blank.

    It's never blank.
Try running it again. Maybe doing it in Windows Safe Mode.
Otherwise, you are not running it correctly, or you have some other system problem.

I am running in safe mode with networking.
I reran sfc /scannow and have a logfile now.
    It is HUGE.
Do you want to see it? Or do you want to see a sfcdetails.txt file if I can produce one?

  23. MaxTurner

    Not the CBS log.
That is why it enables you to create an easy to read text document, which you need to do BEFORE you close the command window.
You carefully read it for the entries that relate to any repairs it could or could not do.
It tells you in the guide linked to earlier how to repair corruptions that SFC could not repair.

    Please disregard post #15.
The card reader drives do not show in My Computer when booted normally.
All 4 DO show up as I, J, K, and L when booted into safe mode.

The easiest fix for slow icon loading is to force the icon cache to be recreated.
    • use File Explorer and navigate to your user folder:
      C:\Users\{your-name}\Appdata\Local\
    • look for the file IconCache.db
    • make a note of the file Size and delete that file
    • restart Windows
    • use File Explorer again and check that the IconCache.db file has been recreated
    • if the file has not been created, restart Windows again
If you do not see the file, you will have to change the View settings for Explorer to show hidden files, folders and drives

The first time I did that, the file was created with the same size.
I deleted the file again, restarted and the file was not created.
After the next restart, the file was created with a smaller size, from about 55K to 29K.

If that does not help, you can change the Max Cached Icons setting in the registry.
I had done that in Windows XP, but that was years ago.

    Full instructions are here:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/255995/fix-slow-loading-windows-icons-by-increasing-the-icon-cache/

As already mentioned, in CCleaner cleaning options, on the Windows tab under Windows Explorer, uncheck Thumbnail Cache.

The Thumbnail Cache item in CCleaner may not be related to this problem.

Thumbnails and icons are not the same thing and Windows does keep some thumbnails stored for faster display when they are needed again.
There is even a specific setting in File Explorer > View settings for Always show icons, never thumbnails

Without screenshots or details, it's impossible to know exactly what's being described as icons, to many users, icons and thumbnails are one and the same.

Running CCleaner, even at its defaults, will remove Windows logs, etc., some of which might have been useful for troubleshooting.

Slow loading in Explorer with very old Windows versions was often down to the excessive numbers of files in the folders being opened.

If accompanied by a general slowness - long boot time, program opening etc, it might be down to something like the DMA access to the drive(s) being reduced by errors, this was often caused by damaged CD/DVDs in the optical drive, but was tricky to fix.

It might be down to something like a new security software added, or changes to the security settings...

At this point, we simply don't have enough details/data.
