How do I turn off the desktop icons to leave only the wallpaper?

 

Right Click on your desktop.

Go to arrange icons by

Uncheck show desktop icons.

 

I did that but the wallpaper disappeared too. Only a blue screen remained.

 

Thats strange.

Are the icons and the wallpaper part of a shell or package?

If the wallpaper is a picture right click it and set it as desktop background and see if it comes back.

 

HideDesk (attached) works quite well. I've used it for a few years now.

I performed a Google search and came up with;
