    Hi,

I have a DSL connection from my W7 machine
and i'm trying to share it with my old XP machine
    through ICS (internet connection sharing)

It has worked fine the other way around (XP- host W7- client)
    but W7 --> XP - nada

    Some information:

W7 - says "unidentified network" and defines the network as public (I want it to be “home” – but it doesn’t let me change it) – see attached picture
XP – when I tell it to obtain ip address automatically it doesn’t connect , when giving it a fixed address it says “connected” but doesn’t connect me to the internet - see attached picture

Will appreciate any help on this.

If you have a router, you can not use ICS. If you do not have a router, and you just have a modem from your dsl provider, get a router. Who is your provider, and what is the manufacturer & model# of the modem that you have?

I use modem baudtec 1 port ETH
My ISP is irrelevant as I am not an american
(For the record Netvision - Israel)

Please note that I already managed to run this ics
But the host was the XP machine not the W7

Here is the info from Microsoft.com http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing

Now, keep in mind, that if the firewall is restrictive on the Windows 7 machine, or your provider sees this as an attempt to go around how they look at fair use of the service, it can cause you to not be able to use ICS. Follow the link above and see if that works. Also, keep in mind that the Windows 7 machine needs to be on when using the other. This is one reason why people opt to get a router, so they do not have to use another machine as a bridge.

These Microsoft instructions has got me to where i am now
I believe they where made for two machines with W7
    They don't work for me...

    About the firewall,
Do you suggest I have to change its properties?

    Now there is a progress...

I used the info in the link you sent me, and set a fixed IP for both machines
Also I set the default getaway same as the ip of the host (W7) computer

    After doing this,

A new icon called "internet gateway" appeared on my XP (see attached picture), The gateway is active - I see "sent" and "received" bytes coming and going !

But still my browser can't see the web...

I suspect the problem is the windows firewall on my W7 machine
that blocks any traffic between the two machines.
But I cant put it down as the network is defined public (see attached picture in the first post) and putting it down will put all public networks down including my internet connection - no good.

Any ideas how to proceed from here?

BTW my modem model is Baudtec R243R1-AO

Delete that bridge at the bottom. On the Windows 7 machine you have to bridge the two adapters, in order to make sure that information can pass from one to the other.

    Almost there...

Trying to bridge the two adapters I got an error message saying that you can't bridge 2 connections that one of them has ics on it.

So, I unchecked the ics option, bridged the two connections and...
My XP machine got connected to the internet !

But - now my W7 machine has lost its connection :(
    and refused to reconnect.

Now, How do i revive the W7 connection?

You are going to have to delete the ICS stuff, and because at this time you are having so many problems, you should just go out and get a wireless router. You can get a wifi router with four ports for under $30 now days.
