I just got a new computer with a SATA HDD, and I wanted to take the UATA-IDE 160 gig HDD from my old computer and put it in the new one for storage. I bought a converter that plugs into the back of the IDE HDD and everything fit right, but when I booted it up, it wouldn't work correctly. All that I can think of is that I got a bad SATA cable with the converter... Any thoughts? I'm going to try using the SATA cable that I know is good and booting up the 160 gig by itself and seeing if it is even detected. Thanks in advance, I'll post again after I try that.

you might also try an IDE cord too ... in case there's a problem with the drive? also note that you will not have any performance boost w/ a converter

sometimes mobos have more than one SATA channel .. I know mine does ... and if you didn't install the driver for the third party controller it won't work ... so it may be as easy as connecting it to the same channel your boot drive is ... also make sure you BIOS settings are correct and the jumper setting is correct(although I wouldn't know which would be the correct for this situation)

Okay, I got it to work, I just had to change the jumper around (only one on the ATA). My MOBO does have 2 SATA ports and the REAL SATA is in the primary position. I'm aware that a converter won't boost the performance of the drive, I just need the space to store stuff like music, photos, etc (media and stuff that takes up space). Thanks for the help
