    hi,

I have an emachine T5026 windows xp, with an IDE hard drive.

Recently hard drive is making strange sounds and it gets stuck and after a few seconds it executes. I guess HD is failing or is at its last life and Of course I can not find the original xp software and would like to copy the image over. ( is there an alternate?)

My intention is to replace the drive, and looks to me the only option is SATA. I have very little femiliarity with SATA and so few question are in order.
1- Since my motherbaord is old, do I need an extra card between motherboard and SATA drive.

2- Would the SATA OEM software after installation be able to copy image of IDE over to SATA and make it bootable? Which OEM do you recommend?

3- What changes are required to BIOS if any.

I am sure I'll have more question later

    thanks for your time.

Unfortunately XP does not have a facility to clone your existing hard Drive OS. So that leaves 2 options and the one I would go for is to Purchase a new XP disc they are quite reasonably priced now. And purchase a new IDE hard drive choosing the size for your requirements the smaller the cheaper of course. The second option which in the circumstances seems pretty remote of success because of the problem with your HD is to use a cloning software like 'Norton Ghost' If you go for a fresh instalation on a new HD you could then 'SLAVE'' the HD that you have at the moment and maybe you could then rescue any files of folders from that drive to the new one. ;) PS. This is assuming that your HD is inaccesible. Have you tried the manufacturers (of the HD) site and DL for free there HD checking Tool/Software it will be in Manufaturers Support.

If your motherboard doesnt support SATA drives, you can purchase an add-on sata controller fairly cheap. Example here.

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking here but I think you are asking if the image from your IDE drive would work on a SATA drive and still be bootable, and the answer is yes. As for the question "Which OEM do you recomend" I'm not sure what you are asking.

If you are looking for an easy way to do this, this is what you want to do:

Install the new SATA card and hard drive. You will then need to use disk management to create a new partition on the new drive.

If you don't have any disc duplicating software (ie Ghost or PQDI) you can get a copy of DriveImage XML completely free. Its an open source application that works well. Using something like this would let you duplicate your current drive to the new one. Once that is done, you will be able to boot from the new drive... basically everything on the old drive will be copied to the new one including the boot record. Hope that makes sense :)

The Sata controller will have its own BIOS. Each one is slightly different but you will configure the sata drives there. When the card is installed and the BIOS initializes you will see a message similar to "Press F11 to configure " or something similar. That lets you go in and configure the drives attached to the new card.
