Ideal Temperature

    Hi please can some1 help, i think my cpu is running too hot, been looking like mad on forums & websites but cant find nothing that states the ideal temp for my cpu here is my spec

    AMD Athlon "Barton" XP3000+ 333FSB (Socket A) CPU
    Abit NF7-S v2.0 nForce2 (Socket A) Motherboard
    Thermalright SLK-900U (Socket 478 & Socket A)
    4 X Vantec Stealth 80mm fan
    Jet 7
    OCZ 1GB (2x512MB) PC3500 Dual Channel Series EL-DDR
    2 X Seagate Barracuda Serial ATA V 80GB
    Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)
    Asus ATI Radion 9800xt
    Creative Audigy 24bit Sound Card

    and im currently running at.

    Idle 52°C
    Load 65°C
    (actually gone as high as 75 and the safety on the pc shut down and alarm sounded)

    does this sound right ?

    That's too high, try reappling the thermal paste, and resetting the heat sink. When you pull off the heatsink, have a look and see if there is thermal paste on it.

    ok taken the jet 7 off and cleaned the heatsink and the top of the cpu off.

    reaplied Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound to the base of the heatsink about 1inch square and replaced the heatsink and jet7 still runnin at about 49°C idle and with the jet turned right down.

    Is there anything else i can do to cool this pc down so i can overclock it?

    i have 2 rear 80 stealth fans 1 front 1 side jet 7 on cpu 2 fans on the gfx card (built in)
    and a fan on the lower of the psu. anything that i might be missing ?

    if the jet is anything like the Aero, you could try rotating the fan so that the exhaust goes out the back of the case and the intake comes in the front, rather than being right up against the PSU. worked wonders for me :)

    49 idle is a good temp, btw :)

    ok turned the jet 90° so that exaust is facing the rear of the pc. Rotated 2 of my fans so i have 1 front 1 rear intake and 1 rear and 1 side exaust. got it to 48 average idle.
    Anything else i might be able to do, apart from water cooling?

    Other than cleaning up cables (stuffing the IDE ribbon cables into a spare drive bay maybe, or even getting rounded ones..), perhaps a bit of air-dusting over heatsinks... there isnt much you can do other than that really. Its up to your own imagination as to what you wanna do with your system ;)

    amd 64 3200+ temperature

    hey guys here's my problem, i think my amd is running to hott. the following are my specs
    amd 64 3200+
    1gig kingston pc3200 ram
    g force mx 64mb video card- haha i know its old lol
    160 gig maxtor 7200 rpm hard drive
    20 gig maxtor 5200 rpm hard drive
    mad dog sound card

    i have got 2 side fans blowing in
    2 rear(exhaust) fans blowing out
    fan on the motherboard heat sink (running at 10,000rpm constantly) blowing away from board
    one fan behind hard drives(front of case) blowing towards the back of the case
    one amd heatsink and fan
    and the power supply fan of course
    *****i run at 49 celcius idle and up to 55 celcius on a good load on the processor
    *****inside the case is at 44-49
    running 2 hot?
    suggestions well appreciated!

    you should look at the airflow in your case, the way I read it your 10k rpm fan is actually disturbing the airflow in your case, hence the high temperatures.

    Well thats about how hot I run on most days, and I'm completley stable (thoroughly tested). But then again ive got a 3000+ non 64. But sounds alright to me. If you were to get a better heatsink you'd see those temps go down.

    Ditch the stock AMD heatsink.
    With interior case temps like that I would say that you airflow isn't laminar from front to back. It's not always about what you have blowing on what, it's about how constantly the air inside the case is exchanged with air outside the case.

    Is it possible that the temp sensors on the motherboard are wrong? I know some abit boards have this problem (like my IC7-G)... snoop around the abit forums. There was a big debate about this temp issue, atleast with the IC7-G boards.

    multiplier overclocked (12x to 13x) to 2100+ (1733MHz)
    Palomino Core and I am running at 1.87v with over-volt in ASUS A7V8X-X

    Thermalright SK-7 CPU Heatsink, Arctic Silver 5 Paste, and 80mm 2500 RPM
    Thermaltake Extreme Spirit A1899 North & South Bridge Cooler
    400W Enermax with dual exhaust fans
    92mm exhaust mid back and 92mm intake on bottom front

    92mm intake and exhaust fans are powerful fans I pulled from
    Proliant server. The two 92mm fans on temp. control to operate on lower
    power during idle or low PC utilization. Front case fan is on duct to direct air flow at processor.

    Temperature reporting software used is MBM 5.

    idle temps
    case 32 C and cpu 45 C

    max load (using Prime95)
    case 32 C and cpu 52 C

    Low powered exhaust/intake fan or poor fan placement hugely affect my results. Temperatures rise dramatically and typically leads to system instability (crash, hard lock, or reboot issues). I find modifying the case and cutting larger intake/exhaust holes has a dramatic affect. Many cases are impractical, especially older cases used in upgrades (Pentium II/III PCs get nowhere near as hot as most of the new PCs).

    From my research it seems ideal the case temperature be late twenties to early 30s and the CPU operate in the 40s to low 50s (Celcius). Most the CPU should operate at is the early to mid 50s during peak load. This is the higher of the ideal range, lower would be preferred. Of course PC will operate at higher temperature, but at the cost of reduced stability and component life.

    I wouldn't say that. I would never run 5-10 degrees below 85c, that's dangerous. its better to run -65C-right below 40. how do u get -65C? well u could just buy prometia for 1,000 dollars. well it'll be more if u add everything...

    i will be running about 9 fans when the last 2 come in, and u think it doesn't matter? well you're uneducated on fans... you see it all depends on what kind of fans you have.. the fans u probably mean are those cheap 80 mm fans. the fans I buy are usually 15-35 dollars lol (oh and most are blue LED to keep my black and blue scheme)

    for instance, getting 2 vantec tornado fans on a fan controller (i have a 4 chan one, gonna get another) would not only allow u to turn it down (as its loudest fan made), but actually have a tornado in your case (one of if not powerfullest fan ever)

    also its a good idea to put ur cpu fan on a controller, as u can controll it and let the fan be max all the time.

    so here my setup:
    1x 120 mm Thermaltake Smart fan intake in back (EVERYTHING dropped about 10C with this onem b/c this fan is LOUD and has the highest airflow CFM i've seen, that's why i got it)
    X-connect full modular PSU 2x fans (both move air out the case)
    1x Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 (takes air from all directions) fan
    2x 80 mm Blue LED fans (1 in front intaking for hdds and lower mobo, 1 in front of cpu fan on side case to bring cold air to cpu. beats having an air duct!)
    1x PCI slot blower (exhaust air out of pci slot in back of case. I put it below my Way Overclocked Geforce FX 5500, and yes the temp dropped like 7C!)
    1x HDD cooler (2 fans. hasn't come in yet, but ima put it on 1 hdd, and the 80mm in the front will provide cold air for it)
    1x Ultra 5.25" Bay Freezer (freezes everything in a bay below and above. also exhaust AND inhales cool air, so its multi purpose and useful)
    1x Ultra Exhaust II System (2 tubes w/ fans go in pci slot and exhaust air. u can turn them anyway you want.)

    with the last 2 (not in yet) i'll probably drop a good 5-10 more c.

    see, its all about what KIND of fans u got ;-)

    its still being replied on b/c the peeps with the real knowledge came to finish answering.. and google is the answer!

    lol, i guess u build hundreds of 'machines' a year and havn't heard of overclocking or that metal conducts electricity better at lower temperatures... well that's the lesson for today!

    its better to run a -65c on prometia, even if ur proc would die at -80c , than to run it at 85 (that's crazy high for me). its harder for electricity and for procs to run hotter, even 1 degrees is a difference ( even though not big )

    so the facts are there, its alot better to run lower, for better performance (doesn't every one want to have better performance, instead of just worrying about the highest temp ur proc will die at?)

    oh and dont dare overclock at that high of a temp (85c), i can about guarantee ur cpu will burn out, if u try to overclock it to its max (not like 1-50 mhz, more like 125-200 mhz increases)
    that's why I put that pci slot blower on my gfx card. it dropped about 6c permantently. that and a big 120 mm blue led thermaltake smart fan brought everything down about 5c (even my hdds). using smart fan all my gadgets (3 hdds, gfx, proc, EVERYTHING even ambience) has gone down at least 5-7c.

    so like I said again, it depends on what fans u have ;-)
