I have an 1800 AMD Athlon, 20 gig hard drive, 526 megs DDR ram, running windows 98 2nd edition. Ok here's my problem, sons wife has been using this computer and there is gobs of JUNK on it. What I want to do is format it and do a clean install of windows 98 2nd edition, and give it to my sister to use. When I try to reinstall off the windows disk I get so far then it starts throwing errors up the behind at me, and I can only boot into safe mode. When I get into safe made and try and remove stuff explorer crashes, and so does everything else. System locks right up. I have taken format off the windows disk and put it on a floppy, but the computer doesn't show the floppy working, so that doesn't work. Any way to get this thing formatted so it will run? Thanks for any help you can give. Yoops

    Ok thanks D3
By needing a windows startup disk, does that mean I have to use a floppy? Computer is not recognizeing the floppy drive, and that's where my problem is. Can this be done with the windows disk itself? Thanks

It's not recognizing it at all. I looked in the Bios, doesn't show the floppy there. I live in the middle of no mans land, and was hoping to be able to get this thing done here, but doesn't look good. Will have to order a new floppy drive I guess. Maybe you could tell me how to get a windows setup disk off the windows cd?? I run windows XP, so the only way I can get it is off that dumb cd. I opened it up and fround the format, and put that on a floppy, is that all I'll need? Thanks again. Been along time sense I have messed with windows 98 2nd edition, and this one is gonna buck me all the way by the looks of it.

Bart's PE doesn't support building 98 PE environments.

Here is a link to an ISO image of the 98SE Startup disk:

    Win98SE Startup ISO

Save the ISO to your desktop.

Create a CD from Image using Nero, CDBurner, EasyCD ....

This will boot the Win98SE Startup disk from CD.

Thanks Puter Dude! Downloaded it and burned it. This hard drive is a pain, it has viruses up the behind on it, and not quite sure if that ruined the hard drive or not. Gonna try this and see if I cab get it formatted this way, but we did get the floppy working on it (my kid wired it backwards) and I have made start-up floppys, but when I get to A: and type in format C: it says unknown file??? bad command??? So will see if it works on the CD. Thanks again, will let you know. Yoops

Yes D3 I know that. lol I have worked on this computer for 2 days trying to get it to format, no matter what I do doesn't work. Tried another hard drive, and I'm getting the same errors I did with the first one. I think maybe the mother board is trashed by the looks of things. We've changed video cards, hard drives, floppys, and no matter what we try it goes into major errors. I sure appreciate all your help, but I think this computer is ear marked for the trash. Thanks for all the help though you 2, just wasn't suppose to fix it I guess. Yoops
