Identify Wifi connection

    Question came up as to how to tell whose
    network you are connecting too.....
    as in, you turn on your laptop and find that you have a network connection and you're sitting in your car outside some buildings ...just shows up as unsecured connection.

    SSID provides a clue, maybe? If it's "WHTABRGR", it's probably the fast food resaturants WAP? Absent that, dunno. If you have a WiFinder and it only lights up strong in the direction of a freestanding, obvious building? Maybe you would ultimately have to intercept some traffic and make some educated guesses according to the content.

    So you are suggesting I get into whoevers router and see if I can identify ...or just screw with them ..sounds like fun ...hijack they're network ...yippee!!!
    Whataburger ....not around here ....more like what a grease trap.:) :)

    No ....not wanting to hack, just chuckling over the possibilities ...the idiots left their router wide open ...:rolleyes:

    Duaghter moved into a duplex complex and called to say she didn't need to purchase internet service ...she was connected.

    I could try getting into the router, but ....why let them know.:rolleyes:

    Haven't lost anhy pieces that I no off ......:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

    Besdes that, I don't know whose it is ....guess I could go around knocking on doors asking if they have an unsecured network setup ...:confused:
