Just opened RegCleaner to see if there was anything that needs removing and I noticed 3 entries by Ariad. Can't figure out which program this is linked to. I did some searches on Yahoo about Ariad and it didn't turn up anything useful for me. Only programs I've installed lately are Shoutcast Software (for Winamp) and Spybot 1.4.

For peace of mind I would just like to know which program these entries came from. I don't believe it's spyware. Thanks for your help!

I checked the registry entry and it doesn't shed any more light as to what program created it. Should I try "removing" those entries with Reg Cleaner and see what stops working? I remember when I installed Spybot 1.4 I got a popup box during the installationg notifying me that if I removed some of the advertisements that parts of the program might not function properly.

I just installed SpybotS&D just to test as seemed strange to force some advertisment on you in an antispyware product.

Did the standard install and didnt get those registry entries, suspect the other app Shoutcast?

edit: maybe I should have restarted my PC, but downloading something and didnt want to interupt, so did manual check of registry and that Ariad is their now where it wasnt before... so Spybot adds whatever that is????

I'd just backup the key, then delete them. If you have no problems, then you are good to go.

One note, none of those keys had anything that looks like the following, do they?

{C5B86F32-69EE-11d2-875F-00A0C93C09B3} <- example clsid If so, there may be more entries to remove.

I can't see the actual key... but here's what it looks like:

Reg Cleaner makes backups of everything you remove... So I guess I could remove them and then restore them at a later date if something stops functioning correctly... I checked my Hijack This logfile, and nothing unusual there... Again I don't think this Ariad business is spyware related but I'd love to know which program created these registry entries.... Any ideas on what to try now?

From looking at just that entrie, you may also want to backup/delete c:\windows\system32\AS-Ifce1.ocx

Also, from reading about this, supposedly A² will see this a Backdoor.MSWord.Nutshell virus. But, this could be a fluke.

Anyway, you may also have AS-Ifce2.ocx located within the same directory.

Do any of the other entries list anything?

    other two are listed as:

Ariad Interface Type : REG_SZ and Data: C:/Windows/System32/
Ariad Interface Components Type : REG_SZ Data: Ariad Interface Components

i'm not really sure how to create backups or find that other entry you told me to look for... normally Regcleaner makes backups for whatever i remove/fix

I found that file... says it was created January of 2002, last accessed today.

alright... i removed the entries with Reg Cleaner and the folder is subsequently gone from my registry... I guess i will have to wait and see what stopped working.. Should i proceed to delete that file from my system32 folder?

    I'd rename it for now.

i guess it's just me and you on this thread... i found this post regarding that file (which is an Active X Control)... It's from the crapcleaner forums, and this person did a scan with A Squared, which detected as that Backdoor MS Word trojan:

i guess it would be safe to delete this file as it doesn't seem to be needed for anything vital to my computer...

I believe I said this on post #7 (I think). But, you did link the link! ;)

Like I said before there may be two files.

I'm going to go with False Positive. Ariad components was made by Cyotek which was taken by Innovasys

well, none of my scanners detected it anywhere... i just saw those Ariad entries in my Reg Cleaner list...

Having searched that file on Yahoo (which is an Active X File), we found the posts relating to that Backdoor trojan... I installed A-Squared (again) and ran an updated scan, it didn't find anything, however that questionable file was sitting in my recycling bin for the scan, but i'm getting ready to delete it.

I tend to be over cautious. I have no related files on my system, that are on your system. So, I suggested renaming the files. If no bad occurences happen, simply delete the renamed files.

what should i rename it to? Instead of renaming a file, can't i just leave it in the recycle bin and see if i have any problems in terms of operating (doesn't this accomplish the same thing) ?

After typing complete and utter b/locks yesterday, now in sound mind and body...

Dunno where Ariad came from in my registry ( none of the antispyware apps ever picked them up as spyware ) .. shoutcast cannot think I've ever installed, Spybot didnt add any of those files and I installed it twice and did registry and file checks inbetween.

The only link I had to c:\windows\system32\AS-Ifce1.ocx is CDBurnerXP, which I un/installed twice to check it did install that .ocx but didnt add those registry entries.

A2 didnt highlight that file as a trojan so, I would go with SPD and say its a false positive, especially as that thread was over 2 months old and A2 updates on a regular basis.
