Identity thru IP Address

    Good Morning,

If I visit a web site, a "small" forum and elect to view the posts and not log on, does the admin/moderators know that I am there (me, not a guest)? Exactly how do sites/servers work (think this is a giant question, just a small explanation will do:) )? Let's say that I have a web site and I want to see how many people looked at my web site for the day, can I do this? If I can do this, can I tell who/where/whatever these lookers came from? And if I've visited a site previously, I'm assuming they can look at my IP address and know (by comparison?) who I am? I checked out the dns site and it reported where I was within a few miles of where I live.

Read about Anonymizer Anonymous, but I read that it hogs space and would this program interfere with my host? Earthlink. Couldn't find any info on EL about IP addresses and identity and if I'm covered thru them. Currently, we have cable and LinkSys wireless with IE6 thru Earthlink.

Please don't get the wrong impression here, I'm not into any cheesy/untasteful web sites or anything, just have my personal reasons of wanting to be anonymous on a certain forum occasionally.

Thanks in advance for any info.:)

To clarify .... once you look up your ip address ( say 69.154.115.58 ), you can go to whois ....and it will report that address ....in my case it comes back as sbc internet/tcworks isp .....this means that when you request a page on the browser ...it replies to your isp....who then interprets the host computer (you) and sends along the info .....if your ip address was "Known" to the web site (like MG's), you wouldn't have to log on ...it would know it was you. But then, what if you used a different computer? Who would it think was logging on? Understand?:) :)
