Running XP, cable modem, Linksys Router Hub, workgroup. I'm sure you all here this ALL the time, but I swear, IE worked just fine this morning. I started other programs within my system (ie: excel). Went back to IE and it wouldn't go to www.msn.com. I got on the phone with my ISP and everything on their end was just fine. So I decided to see if my Kazza worked and it did, i was able to log in and search for files. I then tried the live update for Norton Antivirus and that worked also. Gave up for a while. I thought maybe i might have a virus, so i tried to start virus scan, it would NOT work. Said the scan engine was missing. Tried to uninstall Norton, locked up, rebooted. Then tried to install Norton and it told me that it couldn't initialize transman.dll. OK, now I'm getting mad. So I thought, ok I will try reinstalling XP. It gave me an error message of usbstor.sys is corrupted. The bottle of whiskey and razor blade sits next to me. If I open IE (with www.msn.com as my home page) it won't load. If I mannually type www.majorgeeks.com, by all god, it goes tot he web page. I tried downloading IE 6.0 to reinstall, wouldn't download. I'm so confused. HELP

Not sure if you meant this but your link was for a problem with VeriSign. I went ahead and did it, but it didn't work. I beleive the problem lies with MSN. I changed my "home page" with IE 6.0 to majorgeeks.com and BAM the Major Geeks web site popups. I changed my home page back to msn.com and so go.

OK, I re-read your post. Doesn't really sound like an IE problem, like that's just a symptom.

What happens if you run a chkdsk /r ?

For a virus scan, you might try this online scan if you can get there http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also check for spyware with Ad-Aware, and download Spyware Blaster, both available here at MG.

    PS Nice Avatar, BTW!! :)

ok, went to HouseCall and it found 5 viruses. All located in c:/system volume info/restore.

I also ran chkdsk and everything was ok.

    I updated and ran Ad-Ware

I have no idea how to repair a file. HELP with this one please.

My next option is to reformat my hard drive and re-install everything. i really don't want to do this, but if I have to, then I will.

    Which viruses???
Those are your System Restore points...

Disable System Restore (or you will get re-infected)
    Reboot
Scan for viruses, make sure you're clean, then you can
    Enable System Restore

Then it would be a good idea to clean your registry. This proggie is really good:

    For repairing corrupt system files:
Run "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) from a command prompt
Have your XP CD handy for this operation

Let us know how it goes :)
