When closing Internet Explorer it used to request if I wanted to close the dial-up connection. I no longer get that confirmation window and have been unsuccessful in locating how to turn it back on.

    IE 6.0.28 SP1
    WIN 98

The option for that message will more than likely be in with your Connection/Dialer settings and not in the IE Options menus.

similar to the one below.... just put a tick in the "Prompt to Disconnect" box

Mr. H., I don't think that panel is available in his Win98. But I've been wrong before.

    drgn,
It's been a while since I reconfigured anything in 98, but I'm thinking that maybe you have to do this: Open your Internet Options panels through either Control Panel or Internet Explorer>Tools, click the Connections tab, select (click) your connection in the list of connections, and click the Settings button. There should be an Advanced button on the Settings panel. Click that, and there should be an item or items on the Advanced panel that like the ones Halo pointed to above: Prompt to disconnect, or maybe just Disconnect when connection may .... Whatever you find, change the checkmark(s) for that item/those items: if checked, try unchecking, if unchecked, try checking, Apply and/or OK, then (if you went to Internet Options through Internet Explorer) close IE. Rebooting might be a good idea, since I think whatever you're changing here resets a registry setting. Now dial up and open IE and then close it and see whether you get the desired popup.

Let us know if you get your popup back (or not).

OK, thanks, robo, but I think the "when not needed" thing is what he needs. If it's checked, the disconnect should be automatic and without question, unless there's something OTHER THAN the browser using the connection. But if that option is UNchecked, the browser has to ASK whether to disconnect. I think. (Geez. I wish somebody would ask a question I'm SURE about today.)

    It's worth a shot, a reboot, and a re-starting of the dial-up connection, anyway.

The advanced dial-up dialog you are describing is as attached.

However, I did have a period when the Autodisconnect dialog failed to display, this is because something else (Internet security software in my case) held open the Internet connection and thus preventing the autodisconnect. In this scenario the solution was to turn off the check for Certificate Revocation within the Advanced Internet Options tab.

    What a great crew!
Way back up there, I mentioned that "something OTHER THAN the browser" might be holding that connection open so that the popup wouldn't happen. If that's it, you've got a pretty good bet there, Mr. A.

So, dragon-rider, you've got two tasks now: make sure you don't have anything ELSE holding onto that connection when you close IE, and get in there and change a zero to a 1 according to Halo's link, after you back up the registry.

(If you don't already have a routine for backing up the registry and a few other important files in Win98, there's an easy-to-use freebie that will do the work for you HERE. Just read the simple instructions and follow them.)
