IE 6 takes nearly 10 minutes to open

Whenever I try to open IE 6, the IE window will open but it won't have the homepage or any of the toolbars and looks frozen. BUT... if I minimize it and doodle around in Firefox or just plain wait for about ten minutes it will finally open and work just fine.

However, any time I browse in the now-opened IE and open a link in a new window, the same thing happens to the new window!

I'm running XP SP2 Media Center Edition, and any other information or logs you might need, just ask.

(and don't say "just use Firefox", I've gotten that at other sites and I do use Firefox primarily but there are still a lot of sites that need IE)

    Thanks in advance!

I Have the exact same problem and now when I hit the stop or refresh it starts opening tabs with blank page. If you figure out a fix please contact me and if you give info I will do same. I think this is a malware spyware thing. my daughter used pc and was at my space but thats just my guess. Also I noticed if I go to a different profile IE works fine. I use admin and went to guest and it worked fine. does yours do this also?
    good luck

Just tried my IE6 now. It took 12 seconds to start-up and log onto www.majorgeeks.com as my home site, even with Opera still loaded.

    I don't use IE6 unless I am forced to. I use Opera.

I suggest that you un-install IE6, download a new copy, visit MS for IE6 updates and see if that makes a difference. Bazza

Alright, sounds like a good idea, except that when I go to Add/Remove Programs Internet Explorer is not on the list, nor is it on the list for CCleaner. Are there any other ways of getting rid of it?

There is truly no real way to uninstall IE6.

Nothing was mentioned about upgrading to IE7. Have you tried this?

Actually, when I had IE7 the problem was worse; Internet Explorer just never opened. After downgrading to IE6 it at least opens eventually.

So is there really no way to get rid of IE6, to repair install it or anything like that?

    Another thing to try:
    Dial-a-Fix:
    http://majorgeeks.com/Dial-a-fix_d4899.html

Download extract, then run dial-a-fix (NOT secedit.exe).
Click the "green checkmark". Click GO.
If any errors come up, please post here.
Also, when you do this, your clock properties will appear, simply double check the correct time/date/timezone. Click OK.

If it completes all the way, try IE again.
Though, within this app, is a tools section that allows one to "repair" IE. Works 50% of the time. Only run it, if all else fails. ;)

I did the Dial-A-Fix and the IE reinstall tool, had no error messages, and I'm still having the same problem as before?

I would really like to have IE back, but in case it might be lost for good, what would I need it for that Firefox couldn't do?

Well, in a surprising turn of events, I uninstalled the Google Toolbar and now IE is opening nice and quick like it used to.

    Thanks for your help anyway!
