IE 6 won't open properly

I use Mozilla Firefox all the time but I have IE 6 on my computer...use it once in a while (especially to check for M$ updates). I don't know when I used it last but tried to open it yesterday and the page opens but it just sits there (see photo). Notice it doesn't "say" anything in bottom left hand corner like it is "looking" for the website to connect to.

I have Windows XP home, service pack 2. I can connect to everything else fine. I found the program in the program files and it looks like it is all there. I tried different icons to connect with (start menu, quick start, icon in program files, etc.) Even up on the toolbar in IE only certain things work. Nothing happens when I click on Tools > Internet Options for example.

I decided to just download IE 7 to see if it fixed the problem...downloaded it, installed it, waited for updates, etc. then opened it and the same thing happened. Just sits there with the empty page.

So I uninstalled IE 7 -- read everything I could in the thread "IE 7 gone crazy" thread but I don't think that applies to me because IE 6 just stopped working.

Anyone have any ideas? I did reformat my computer a month ago. I must have used IE 6 right then to download M$ updates. Again, it's no big deal, but even in Mozilla you have the choice to "view page in IE tab" and that doesn't work -- and sometimes you just need to be able to do that.

Did you try a repair install?

I'm not sure what you mean by that - so no, I didn't

OK - I ran several options on Dial-a-Fix but I still can't open IE. Were you thinking of specific items I should check / uncheck (I'm not familiar with this program)?

Wonder if IE6 got corrupted ....try a sfc scan .....start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have your xp disc handy ...run twice to be sure.

OK - I did this with everything checked -- didn't help

I went there and it was about "during system update some dll's didn't register themselves." So I did start - run - regsvr32 and did the dll commands they gave.

All dll's registered EXCEPT when I got to:
    msjava.dll

The message was: "Load library ("msjava.dll") failed - the specified module could not be found.

Does anyone know what this means?

I rebooted the computer and tried IE again, but nothing.

I did not do scannow because of this specific error - figured it must mean something since it was the only dll that didn't register.

OK - got it copied and registed -- but IE still won't open.

So next is that scannow thing? I did that before when my computer was dying (that's when I eventually ended up reformatting it).

One other thing you might try below. If you have been using FF don't know why it would make a difference now, but try it anyway.

    1. Open Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.

    2. Click the Programs tab.

    3. Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.

    4. Click OK.

    5. Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.

Yeah - I had thought of this too and already tried it. Opened IE again -- didn't make any difference, same blank white page as below.

    Weird.

Everything works great on my pc so I don't want to mess with it too much (after all my recent problems and need to reformat). But there's no other way to get M$ updates without IE right?

Try regsvr32 urlmon.dll again, and then the ones below.

    • Shdocvw.dll
    • Actxprxy.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Mshtml.dll
    • Browseui.dll
    • Shell32.dll

Start>Settings>Control Panel> Add Remove Programs>Select Internet Explorer 6 from list >Add/remove> Second Option is Repair Internet Explorer.

    Try the following:

Click START, then RUN, then type in:

    iexplore www.google.com

    Does google showup?

Also, within dial-a-fix, then should be a tools button (it is the hammer button).

Scroll down to repair/reinstall IE. Select that, then press GO.

    Weird -- can't find IE in add/remove list...but it's found in C:program Files\Internet Explorer

Nope - just the same "frame" for IE and the empty white space...

I thought this would be the easiest answer since I couldn't get to IE in add/remove programs BUT...
the first error that popped up was (see below). I put in my "M$ Windows XP Service Pack 2" CD and it didn't find iexplore.exe on it...I manually opened every folder and clicked open and retry. So I put in my original M$ reinstallation CD (which is Windows XP service pack 1) and it wouldn't find iexplore.exe on that either.

If I look in C:windows\service pack\i386 I can see iexplore.exe -- it has 91.0 KB in it. So I don't know why Dial-a-fix can't "find" it on the C drive.

OK - I first did SP 2 from a CD - with no problems (this was back when lots of people had issues with installing SP 2). I have high-speed internet so I can try this as long as it lets me download through firefox and not IE.

  23. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Yes, ye can download via FF. Just requires a few more steps. :)

  24. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Just double checking -- I have SP 2 already -- so downloading and opening the ENTIRE sp2 again is OK?

I know we're doing this for the IE6 part but it's not going to be a problem?

One other thing pegg, the Yahoo Toolbar can cause that. If you have it installed, I would uninstall it thru the control panel, restart and see if that helps.

Hey - you may be on to something because I had a MS security update icon today and I clicked on it (wondered if it would actually download anything with FF and not IE open).

An error box showed up after it said download had started and it said:

"Will only install over an existing version of Microsoft VM"

Then it all closed and said the update was successful (but I don't think it was)

    It pointed me to
C:Windows/Software Distribution/Download/Install/msjavwu.exe to find this but I do not have an "Install" folder in the "download" folder at all.

So is this the main problem?

This may just be a way to "go around" the problem, instead of solving it; but I switched to Mozilla Firefox for my browser, instead of IE. Geeks recommends this in the "Malware Removal" Support Forum. You can download Firefox by looking in that Forum or from the HomePage by looking at the choices in the list (to the left), & I believe it would be under "Browsers" or something like that. Just an idea you may want to try if you keep having trouble with IE. Good Luck!:)

Thanks - I have FF and use it all the time. But I have IE as a program -- it just isn't opening correctly and sometimes you need to use it for certain internet pages (or for MS updates -- I believe)

Well, maybe I need to give up here.

I went to Yargwel's site and tried to do the various steps. First I have the Windows XP SP1 CD which I can't use because it realizes SP2 is on my computer so it says something about not being about to work and stops the install process.

So I followed steps about "integrating the SP2 files iinto the Windows XP installation folder" and even trying both methods I got the below message:

It says that "after integration" (which I can't do) then I can do in "in-place upgrade or repair installation" so...what to do, what to do.

Also, I did sfc /scannow 2x and it scanned and then just went away and didn't ask for anything or tell me anything. I also tried to restore to an earlier date and it took about 10 minutes, pc restarted then it said "could not be restored to earlier date, no settings were changed" (I usually get that -- I don't think I've ever been able to restore to an earlier date -- hmmmm)

    My daughter's upset now= can't have that.

Below is all I tried to do today and supposedly all was unsuccessful. But she went to open up "Paint" program that's always been in Start>Programs>accessories and it's disappeared!

What does that mean? And can I get that back somehow? Remember, it never seems to work to do a system restore, although I didn't try to do one just for that program.

I came here first because I find it bizarre that Paint just is gone.

Out of curiosity, how large is iexplore.exe located within c:\program files\internet explorer\iexploer.exe ?

Also, ye are running xp sp2? Click START, then RUN, then type in:

    winver (press enter).

    What version do ye get?

I already had uninstalled Java and I have v.10 Idid that a week ago)

I tried mspaint.exe and I got the same message as with "mspaint"

For the java issue, goto the control panel, then double click the "Java" Icon.

Eventually (takes a bit o' time), the java control panel comes up. Click the advanced button, then click the + next to "Default java for browsers". Is internet explorer checked?

Also for a test, go to:

    http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

    Click "verify installation".

  43. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Um -- I don't have a "default java for browsers". The only thing that opened that mentioned IE was the "applet" choice (see picture). Does that mean anything (plus I see that it's not checked for Mozilla - which I use - which is working fine and dandy.

Yeah- I had verified this the other week when I installed v. 10.

I thought abri might be talking about some conflict with "virtual machine" that I needed to check out. So all I need is Java v.10 up and running? (except see picture)

    Hi pegg,
your thread has become sufficiently complicated that I would like to make sure I understand it. It is often the case that several things don't work all at once, but this does not necessarily mean all the issues are related. I would like to say what I have understood so far:

    - your IE browser is not loading, it just stays blank?
    - you've lost mspaint?
    - you can't find IE in the add/remove programs list?
    - you cannot run any kind of fixes from your XP-sp1 cd, but you have both an XPSP1 CD and you installed SP2 from a CD and also have XPSP2 CD?
    - with a specific MS update you get the error message: "Will only install over an existing version of Microsoft VM" ?
    - your java dll is not registered?

    1) In one thread where someone had a blank IE screen, they were able to fix it by changing the setting in Zone Alarm from high security to medium security. I don't know what firewall you are using.

    2) IE should not be in the add/remove programs, but rather, after going to the add/remove programs, it should appear in the list of "Windows Components". If it appears in Windows components, it is possible to run a repair.

    3) If you go to Program Files under C, is there an Internet Explorer folder there and, if so, is there an Internet Explorer in there? Are you using IE6?

    4) When you did urlmon.dll, did you do it as follows?
    Start
    Run
    regsvr32 s/ urlmon.dll
Try this and see if the s/ makes a difference.

    5) After you deinstalled Java, did you reboot before you installed version 10?

I believe MSPaint could be a separate problem and it would be best to solve the IE problem first.
    abri
