    Hi,

I currently have IE 7. Is IE 8 a better browser and, therfore, a worthwhile upgrade?

    Thank you.

    jamesfg,

Hi my name’s Feran and I’m working with the Internet Explorer Outreach Team.

You can check out the IEBlog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/ to get some more information about IE8. This is also a good site to give you a better idea of IE8 and see how it differs from IE7 - http://www.ie8demos.com/tryit/.

You can also download IE8 here if you haven’t already - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx?ocid=ie8_sm_a and let us know what you think about it!

    Hopefully this helps you out!

    Hi feran

What languages and countries do you guys cover? English only? US only?

    Thanks for the initiative anyway.

    You're welcome Cordialis.

Yes at this time the Internet Explorer Outreach Team for the most part assists in English speaking threads/forums primarily in the U.S. but also the UK , Australia etc.

Im currently using IE 8 with the new look Firefox 3.1 beta 3

IE 8 is a good browser better than IE 7 its alot faster then the old browser and there is a few add-ons you can install aswell as accelerators.

defo give it a try you might not want to switch back to the old browser.

I thought so. The US is a very provincial place. :-D International means UK and Australia. Canada probably also. And in English only. Of cause.

    Feran,

I downloaded IE8 and I like it. One problem I do have is that when I do "Private Browsing", my McAfee Site Advisor does not show. Can this be corrected?

    Thank you.

May I join in here? Hi Feran, I have a question on IE8 also.... I have Windows XP SP3 IE7, and am on a dial-up connection rolleyes

My question is: Is IE8 going to be offered in AU? If not, how big is the file? If it is huge, how can I go about burning it to a CD to install onto my computer?

Being on dial-up does present a problem when downloading huge updates... If it is offered in AU, (which I haven't seen yet), that would help a great deal.

Also, :-D I have been having problems with "MY MSN" page to display properly.. NONE of the modules work :confused I can't read mail, look at stocks, or collapse any of the modules... I have done maintanance, and deleted cookies, etc.. All other sites load perfectly, with no problems, including MSN.. However, "MY MSN" will load, but at the bottom of the page, it is always, "done, but with errors".... Can you explain the reason for this? Thanks, :wave

Hi again, I see I am too late to edit, :(, so I will just have to add my 2¢ worth here... I just checked Windows Updates, and I don't see IE8 there anywhere...

I sure hope I don't have to manually download this one... I will do some more research, and see if I can find some info on it... :wave

OK, forgot one thing: I also have Trend Micro PC Cillin 14. Will IE8 get along with it? I have web browsing dissabled in it. . Thanks.

Thanks, OMA, that helps a great deal. Always good to know these things ;)
I will check and see how big that file is... when the SP3 came out, my AU didn't pick it up. Had to have my ISP burn it, and then load it... I hope this one gets picked up by AU. It makes updating so much easier.. Thanks again, :wave

Any idea how BIG this file is?

Since it's an update to the IE browser I don't expect it to be as large as SP 3. One can always burn it if necessary. Perhaps someone who downloaded the beta or the final version of IE 8 can shed some light on this issue.

From what I've read, I'll rather stick with IE 7 for now until I know for sure that all bugs have been ironed out. Am using Firefox anyway.

Thanks, again, oma, I was just reading some of the complaints and problems :banghead , so I hope they get those bugs fixed before it is offered on AU. I also know that once I un-checked an update, I don't get the opportunity to redo it... Bummer.. OK, also, I have a web accelerator on my computer from my ISP.. Now, after seeing all the extra 'accelerators and slices' that IE8 offers, I am really confused :confused I wonder if they would have a conflict with my WA? All these issues need to be addressed by MS. Thanks for the info :wave

    Hi TeeCee

TBH I would try it and make sure that any add-ons from 3rd parties are either uninstalled or updated, thinsg like toolbars Adobe Flash, Java etc as those are what many are forgetting to update in their browser and thus causes crashes on certain websites, plus specific websites that dont conform to standards may not load, but in IE8 you have a Compatability mode next to address bar to click to assist in loading these websites.

Reading many of those compaints on Cnet (not that I really take stock of whats posted on that site and have not since its creation) is that most issues are 2rd party ones, and ones from folk who dont like change, and by change I mean that a button has moved!!!

I have now installed IE8 on 26 PCs and all are fine, with a mix of XP, Vista and x86 and x64 OSes. I also use Firefox and more so its latest beta project in Minefield and it has a raft of bugs but is fine so long as you dont install poorly coded 3rd party add-ons.

Actually found the online installer much easier and less problematic than the WU one, and I was party to the beta testing on this IE version so did many scenario testings with update and full install.

Hi Hallo, It almost sounds confusing... I don't mind change, for sure... As far as "toolbars Adobe Flash, Java etc as those are what many are forgetting to update in their browser ", I will have to admit, I thought it did itself:-D

Anytime an update is offered, I will take it, or allow it to run... Any idea on how I can go about checking to see if I have the current Adobe Flash, Java, etc?

The Web Accelerator I have, was installed by my ISP. Remember, I am on dial-up. No high speed here in the boonies!:-D

I don't have any problem with updating anything, really.. And as far as a button moving? Nah, that's just fine... I am very adaptable! :-D

Thanks for the info... I have AU turned on, so anytime there is an update, it usually does pick it up, except for the SP3. That one was a bear.

Now, to find out if I have the current Java, Adobe Flash, and whatever... I do know that my Google toolbar updated not too long ago.. So, that must be a good sign..

It sounds like you did do a lot of IE8 installing, and you didn't run into any problems? That is really good to hear, from someone who has been there, done that... :)

    OK, thanks :wave

Yes. Drive your computer over to the Secunia Security site.
You can either let it scan your computer online or download a program and run it (it will connect to the internet as it is checking).
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/
I run the personal (downloaded version) on all my windows computers about every two months to be sure the addons are up to date.
I needed to update Foxit (I use this instead of Adobe).

Thank you plodr, I will give it a whirl.. As far as driving it over, the tires are flat :-D As long as I can do it with a dial-up connection... Will check that out here shortly... I'll be back, and let you know how it goes ;)

  23. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, I clicked the link, and it then clicked "start scan", but it didn't work.Soooo, I am now downloading the PSI Setup.exe..... I am HOPING this is the "personal (downloaded version)" you were speaking of? Oh, this is fun :(... OK, I'll be back shortly.......

Well, that sure didn't take long... Here is the error I got...

Thanks Hallo, That link loaded just fine... It has scanned, and found I need two updates: Apple quicktime and Sun Java....

The second one will take a while, like about 2 hours yet, so I am thinking maybe try the updates to Sun Java first, and then the Apple...(?)

OK, i shall give this a whirl, and will be back shortly ;)

Hi Halo, (noticed I spelled it right!!) OK, I just cancelled the Apple update, cripe, that was a 6+ hour update, and 20+MB (which is impossible on dial-up as it is) and I know that is wild.. I have 1 hour left on the download manager, so maybe I'll wait until that is done.... and try it again...

I'd still like to know how to update that Sun Java... Maybe the download manager will help with that? We shall see.... Thanks again, I'll keep ya posted ;)

Hello again, the Download Manager is now downloaded, and it has picked up the Apple/qucktime downlaod, but still can't quite figure out the SunJava update..... Hmmmm..... I can type the www.sunjava.com into the http section, but don't know exactly what update for it to collect.. Also, if I 'pause' an update, will I lose any information? Can I resume it later on? Thank you :)

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, I am here, and online, and I see my symbol as off-line.. Hmmm.... OK, Halo, what do ya think? can I pause the Apple-quick-time download/update until later on? Also, how can I find the proper update for sunJavaJRE1.5x/5.x? I clicked onto the button on the PSI, but only got the Apple one to give me an update... Nothing happens when I click onto the Java.. Are they even still in buisness? Thanks, and yes, I am still here :wave

About Java: the way to go about it is to run Java's scanner here: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Then download and save to your desktop but don't install yet.

Now you need to uninstall all old Java before reinstalling. Do it from Add/remove programs. Then run this tool from JavaRa. It will take down residue: http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

Now install Sun Java Version 6 Update 13 (and what else was recommended from Sun' scanner). Finally delete the remains on your desktop.

Recently Sun Java improved their program so that it will take down old Java when you install new updates. However this is only the case for newer versions. Very old Java will still be left behind. And this is a security risk that you don't want to take.

You should not delay the QuickTime update. Security is a factor here also.

I recently uninstalled all QuickTime, Apple, Safari, BonJour and what else they call it. I made sure the programs were not running by deactivating them first.

I then ran a search with Search Companion (the one with the yellow dog in XP Home) - I made sure to search in hidden files and folders also. And several folders with residue came up. I then wanted to delete them of cause. But it wasn't possible. Turns out that you have to change permissions. This is done by right clicking on the folder on Search Companions list. Then select Properties. This opens a small grey window with tabs. On one of the tabs it is possible to change permissions by putting a check mark in the little grey boxes.

I had remains from 8 previous versions of QuickTime that Apple left behind. And they wanted to prevent me from making my own decisions by putting my permissions out of work. Really made me angry. I'm the Administrator here and I decide what's on my PC and what's not!

Hi Cordialis, I ran Java's scanner, and here is the result:

    <Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 13).>

Looks like I already have the proper version of Java to me....

I also used the Download manager to download the update for Apple Quicktime. Now, I see it is totally downloaded, so is it also installed, or do I have to do that? the download manager is all new to me, so please bear with me, OK?

Thank you so much for the help... I don't understand why the PSI scanner said my Java needed updating.. Now, I am confused..... Very......

  33. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, again, too late to edit.....

When I ran the 'Test your JVM', I got this:
<You are using anolder version of JRE. You can download the latest version from the link above; Sun Microsystems Inc. Java 5 Update 6 Windows XP>

OK, what do you suggest? Still download and save to desktop?

  34. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

About QuickTime: Secunia PSI will tell you if you run the scan again. Secunia wont complain if all is well. :)
About Java: there could be a problem. It sounds as if you have old Java versions installed also? You mentioned this in your post above: sunJavaJRE1.5x/5.x. Run Secunia PSI again and uninstall the versions it's complaining abort. In Secunia each Java version will have 2 entries.

All the Sun Java downloads is listed here so you can get it again in case you make a mistake: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

  35. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

Maybe the PSI scanner discovered that you have old Java files. Sun did a poor job of removing the old when it put on a new update.

Use this tool JavaRA to remove all the old versions of Java on your computer. (It will not remove 1.6 build 13).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download5967.html

  36. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

Well yes. Actually I would recommend that you save this recommended download to your desktop. And that you do the same with a new version of version 6 update 13. In other words: one more time!

Now you need to uninstall all Java before reinstalling. Do it from Add/remove programs. Then run this tool from JavaRa. It will take down residue: http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

Now install Sun Java Version 6 Update 13 (and that other Java program recommended by Sun's scanner). Finally delete the remains on your desktop.

Now your are sure that you do not have old Java inside your PC.

  37. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, I added it to download manager, and it downloaded it to the desktop. I will now attempt (?) the rest of the suggestion now.... Wish me luck, eh? :)

I don't think it took the entire download.... I may have to be connected to the internet to finish the update..... It is 10 MB..... OK, like I said, wish me LUCK, I think I am going to need it.. I have to remove all the Java, eh?
How and where other than in add & remove programs do I find any other Java??? thanks, :wave

Hello Cordialias, thanks for coming back!! The only Java I know of on my system is the one running... I thank you sooooo much... Now, I am going into add & remove programs, and remove "J2SE RUNTIME ENVIROMENT 5.0 UPDATE 6" That is 152 MB HUGE! that is the only one I can find, and the 'puter is 2.5 yrs old.. then I will run the tool you listed. Thank you!

This tool that we have been recommending for you all the time will do it for you. The tool is called JavaRa and JavaRa will remove leftovers of Sun's Java. Here: http://majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

I think you need to read the thread again to see the pattern.

  40. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

I only have Sun Java Version 6 Update 13 installed. Very few programs needs more than that and I don't have any of those. As you point out some of the other Java programs are quite big.

  41. TeeCee

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Alright, I clicked the link from Ploder first, as my Java did update a while back.... I am running the scan again, just to be sure... It is still showing both the Sun Java JRE 1.5.x/5.x and also Apple Quicktime 7.0...

OK, so I need to remove ALL the JAVA first or just the 1.5 one?

how does the the download manager work? I add the download, it picks it up, BUT, does it install it too, or do I have to do that? The tool is there also... Please bear with me... ;)

  42. Cordialis

    Cordialis MajorGeek

I would start all over. Take all Java out. Take all QuickTime out. Use JavaRa to eliminate residue. Use Search Companion to locate even more remains - QuickTime leaves a lot behind so also search for QuickTime as well as Java. Then reinstall the programs.

Search Companion is the one with the yellow dog in XP Home. Ordinary desktop search programs wont find it.

That's how we all do it. And we swear out loud at the software developers for doing such a poor job. It's not you. QuickTime and Java really are this bad.

Secunia PSI can't delete all remains for you - it isn't an uninstaller. It can, however, tell you about what updates you need. It really is a fine program.

Oh, thank you so much Cordialis, I will do just that.. Now, I did use the search for the old Java, but came up with nothing..

My other question, when the Download Manager picks up an update, does it also install it? Thank you so much... I am sooo glad to find out it isn't me, as I am trying here ;) Really, I am.... I will try again to uninstall the java 5 Update 6, because it wanted me to close all programs and restart.... :confused I don't want to lose the tool link, but if I have to I can come back and pick it up... Thank you ;)

    PS, I am re-reading the thread :)

What you do is that you download the update but you do not install it. You save it to your desktop. You'll see two buttons on the little grey download promt. One that says "Run" and one that says "Save". Click "Save". The download will still be sitting there on your PC's desktop when you have finished running JavaRa. Then you click the download and install the new Java. This time you click "Run".

Secunia PSI will not install anything on you PC without your permission. You have to click "Download solution" in order to get the update installed. Secunia isn't really called download manager. It's mission is to be a security program and provide you with a fully patched system. Secunia PSI will tell you when a program has become inecure. Updates are very important nowadays because of the explosion in the amount of malware.

OK, I am back up and running ! Thank you Cordialis, I now have Java 6 Update 13. ;) That took a while, because there was only two buttons, my friend, run & cancel.... I will have to spend more time with the SPI, to better aqaint myself.. The new update for Apple Quicktime is all downloaded there, so I will take care of that tomorrow... Thank you so much, Cordialis, you have been a tremendous help :-D I am not too green, but this was a first for me.. Next time, it won't be so scary!!!!:-D

Good Morning Cordialis, i thank you so much ;) I will do the Quicktime later today.... I was using search companion when searching for the old Java.. OK, that is now done , so now it i s on to Quicktime... From re-reading the thread, I see that I need to remove all Quicktime before installing the update. OK, that is do-able..

However, :-o, I still haven't figured out how to get the Quicken update from download manager to install it.... I cannot find any "Download solution" to install... I even searched within PSI, and got no results:confused

OK, will be back later this evening, folks, as some things cannot be put off, like DR appts....:(.... So, Cordialis, I hope to see you here later?

Have a great day everyone.... I will be back here later ;)

I am still working on the solution to Quicktime, as it did download to the download manager, but I have yet to figure out how to get it from there to where it is supposed to be... Like, 'installing'..... I have looked for a "Download solution", but so far, haven't found it... If I can figure that out, the rest will be pretty easy... I THINK!!:-D Yes, I'll keep ya posted. :)

    Jamesfg,
By default, IE8 will disable toolbars, plugins and other browser extensions while using InPrivate mode, because IE cannot control what those add-ons do with browsing data. You can turn them back on, but be aware that they may end up "leaking" data about your session.

If you try to turn them on and still can't get it to work your best bet will be to check with McAfee or with technet forums: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

You may also want to make sure you’re using the official add-on: http://www.ieaddons.com/en/details/Security/McAfee_SiteAdvisor_For_Internet_Exp/

    TeeCee,
Microsoft will wait a while before it begins to push IE8 to Windows users who have their computers set to get the latest updates automatically. RC1 users will be the first to be upgraded automatically.

So at this time I would suggest manually downloading IE8, which is available in AU. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx?ocid=ie8_sm_a

It will ask you to select your country and regions and that’s where you can specify AU.

I hope this helps you all!

    Feran,
    Internet Explorer Outreach Team
