Ie, Add/Remove, and Log in problems

When I attempt to load in normal mode, I enter my password twice. (This is a problem, I assume, as before I only had to enter it once.) The log in comes up, I type my password, it states signing in, then signing out, and then the log in pops back up. After the second time, it works. However, once that happens, I can see the background of my desktop, no icons, no taskbar. I have left it alone for an hour and still nothing shows up. Before I came to you for help, when I clicked on IE the browser would open up, and then two seconds later close. A message would then state:
    File Download - Security Warning
Do you want to save this file?
    Name: navcand
Type: Unknown file type 2.64 KB
    from: ieframe.dll

I was told that by changing my temp internet folder this would fix it, I however don't appear to have the folder they need me to change it to.

When I attemp to click on Add/Remove, nothing happens. No matter how long I wait, it will not show up.

I attempted to reinstall windows, but when it asked for my password, it told me my password was invalid three times and then asked me to reboot. My password is correct.

I hope this help and I am willing to do whatever you need. But my options are limited.

so do I cut my loses and reinstall? I'd rather not, and am confident that you guys can help. I got redirected from the malware removal section, considering we believe this to be a software problem.

Oh, and if its not too much trouble. I apparently installed another version of windows on my other harddrive and am given the option to dual boot. I'd like to know how to get rid of that.

As you can see, I apparently just know enough to be dangerous. Any help will be appreciated.

Yeah, I did some reading on the IE error, it appears to be an error with the temp files folder. But even after I did what it said to fix it, it still won't work. And of course, I can't access the add/remove to remove anything. So I am of course still in trouble. Not to mention the other problems listed.

I do have the folder (earlier I thought I didn't, after rereading I found it), and followed the instructions, the two sets, and it still didn't work.

    Yes, I have run CCleaner.

OK, hang tight someone with more knowledge on this will come along. It's late, but the folks overseas and night owls should be popping in before long.
I am not as familiar with IE7 as I want to be and don't want to send you down the wrong path.

Ah ha, well the good news is, I just fixed the IE7.

The bad news is I still got a bunch more left to fix.

I will hang tight, this forum is awesome.

I hope you didn't install Windows on the same drive twice. I did that once as a last resort, I know of better ways now. Very unstable so probably not. What is the make and model of your computer? Right now I am using a Compaq Presario 2100, a single 60 Gigabyte Hard Disk Drive, 1 Gigabyte of RAM, a DVD/CD-RW Drive. the Operating System is Windows XP Professional with SP2 installed and Windows is up to date, all high priority updates are installed except Internet Explorer 7. I run Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 for anti-virus and firewall. That is the only anti-virus and firewall I have enabled on my computer. At present am using Internet Explorer 6.00.2900.2180 and Firefox 2.0.0.3 as web browsers. Also have Microsoft Small Business installed (office tools, word, excel, publisher, and outlook). Give as many specifics as you can... it will help others to help you

    Ok.

Well, I didn't install it on the same drive. Two different drives, I just need to get rid of the dual boot option.

I hate to be a n00b, but is there somewhere on my computer I can check my specs? I can't really recall the details about it.

The IE 7 appears to be fixed, but normal is still in jeopardy. Now I can get to the log in, desktop, and see the icons, but I cannot click on any of them or access and programs. So I suppose its back to safe mode.

At least now I can talk to you guys on my own computer with the internet.

Basically, my big problem now is that I can't access Normal mode.

You may want to give dial-a-fix a shot:
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4899
Click the green checkmark to select all check boxes, then press go.

If that doesn't help, try the following:

Click START, then RUN, then type in:
    msconfig (press enter)
Select the radial button (.) selective startup.
uncheck [ ] Load startup items. Press okay, okay to reboot. Does this help any?

The above is not a fix, but a way to see if something on startup is messing things up. You could go one further, by clicking the tab services.

Then clicking the check box "hide all microsoft services". Then click disable all. This will disable ALL non-microsoft services.
    Click ok, ok to reboot.

Note the msconfig option is merely a troubleshooting guide to pinpoint what is causing the issue. Though even msconfig doesn't always work. :(

does anyone else have any other ideas?

    Ok...so I'll reinstall windows...

Because when I try to repair it, it won't let me, says my password is incorrect.

    Still worried.

    Suggestions?

Just curious, are you installing from a Microsoft disk or is it a copy?

  18. ThirdManPro

    From microsoft.

It is a tad old though.

  19. ThirdManPro

    ThirdManPro Private E-2

Ok, so I repaired. Got the repair to work.

Except now, its the same problem.

I log in, and then the desktop just sits there. no incons, no nothing. I wait forever.

I will give it a try in the morning.

But its worrying me, its not that I don't just have icons, I don't have a taskbar or anything. Nothing can be done, even right clicking.

Hit CTRL + ALT + DEL, to bring up the task manager. Click the file menu, then new (task).

Type in: explorer (press enter). Does your desktop show up, or does explorer show up?

  23. ThirdManPro

    ThirdManPro Private E-2

Hitting control alt delete does not work. Nothing shows up.

I had tried that earlier because there was no way for me to shut down, and i was hesitant to just turn my computer off manually.

  24. ThirdManPro

    ThirdManPro Private E-2

    Oh yay!

Now it won't even let me in safe mode because windows needs to be activated first!

    and the rub?

Windows can only be activate in normal mode.

    which still does not woooooooooooooork!

Heh, bit of a problem. I don't have a floppy disk drive, only CD and DVD.

    Now what?

Do you think I should just buy a new version of Windows?

This thing is kicking my ***.
