I'm getting the 100% notification and resultant slowdown too often.

Running Win XP-3 and IE 8. I can duplicate the error with any embedded video on the page. I don't seem to have the problem if I go to the video directly and don't run it from the embed. In other words, if I go directly to You Tube and view the title I don't get a notification as I do at the original page. I'm thinking the problem coincides with the IE 8 upgrade/install but can't be positive.

Went through the Malware Steps on MG this weekend with no problems reported. I use Norton for protection. Prophylactics not needed at my age.

I look at CPU Usage/Memory History. CPU @100%, Mem at 60%. I'm limited to 1.5 GB Mem and that is what is installed. The max was installed last week and while faster during normal ops, the embedded video still slows it way down.

I ran a couple of Driver Checks and do note that some of the freeware checks return with out of date but as the checks are free, the fix is not and I did not want to start messing with drivers without getting feedback from a General here at Major Geeks. I know enough to be dangerous but like to light the fuse from a mile or so away.

    Thanks in advance.

If you right click on the taskbar and open Task Manager, then select the 'processes' tab, it will show you what processes are using up the CPU and RAM (Memory). If you click on the CPU column header, it will sort by the processes that are using up the CPU. This should point you in the right direction.

And I always use Firefox Browser.

Also, anything running in the background will be putting a strain on you at the same time.

I thought I received e-mail notification last time on the site and realized this morning when I checked that was not necessarily the case. Thanks to those that have replied. I'm hoping this additional detail may provide further insight along with an additional question or two. I've been using IE so long I hate to go to a new browser but 'ol Bill is certainly pushing me in that direction.

I use auto-update notification, tell me when available and I'll go from there. I was shocked at the updates needed when I went to Windows update. I downloaded/installed all but am curious why these were not already installed based on the format I use for update notification/installation. Insight appreciated if applicable.

I downloaded/installed the latest driver for the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420.

I have been watching the process/performace window while trying to figure out what is going on with the system/notification. I can duplicate the error every time as follows:

    1. Open homepage (MSN) and watch CPU Usage jump and return to 4-7% as would be expected.
    2. Go to favorites and open Zerohedge. http://www.zerohedge.com/ The CPU Usage will jump but return to what I consider normal usage of 4-15%.
    3. From the ZH main page, I click on an article and usage goes to 100% and stays there. I notice that waiting for plug-in....is at the bottom of the screen and the green status bar sits for a while. I wait varying times and nothing changes until I hit the back arrow.
    4. When I hit the back arrow and go to ZH main page CPU Usage drops back to normal usage.
    5. I have tried copying the URL for the article screen in a new tab with the same results, 100% usage.
    6. I can redirect back to the home page (MSN) from a 100% Usage Page and the usage will drop to 4% or so.
    7. While typing this last meassage I have been watching the usage and it stays between 0 and 12% depending on how fast I am typing it appears.
    8. PF Usage is at 491 MB and there are 47 Processes running.
    9. It is always iexplorer.exe that is at 99% or better when I verify which process is the problem.
    10. There is no change with the updates installed in this scenario.

The System Info gives me the following:
    Microsoft Windows XP Pro
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

    Registered to:
    Me
    xxxxx-OEM-xxx...

    Manufacturer and support by:
    Dell Comp Corp
    Dell DIMENSION 8250
    Inte(R)
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
2.39 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

The last guestion I have based on the responses here is does the Windows Update file look at the currently loaded drivers and if updates are available, why I have not seen notifications in the past.

Again, thanks in advance and I certainly appreciate the knowledge on this site.

I'm not sure if one is notified when an additional post is made to a post that one has already replied to. As such, I wanted to mention that I have posted based on recommendations and see if any further insight is gleaned.
    Thanks again.

I apologize for the duplicate. I'm not sure if quick reply and reply serve different functions or not.

Installed/using Chrome and the problem went away. It was an IE Browser issue but I have no idea what that issue was. I'm done with IE. Thanks to those that replied earlier.
