IE disconnects with new router

Hi all,
did the search with no luck and am a novice with computer terms so please bear with me.

I have a Dell 4500 desktop system/pentium 4 cpu with Windows XP2 that was hooking up thru a Speedstream 5360 modem (DSL) with no problems. I installed a NETGEAR WGR614v6 wireless router for my kids DELL laptop inpiron 1505. The laptop wireless unit hooks up with no problems. The desktop unit appears to disconnect from the internet - the dial up window appears and I have to hit the connect botton. It then fails to connect and the "do you want to connect or work offline" window appears. Clicking connect doesn't work, and it takes about 10-15 hits on the "x" to close the window. At this point I uncheck the "work offline" from the "file" pull down menu.

Now at this point sometimes the internet connects, sometimes continues to fail, or I have to reboot the desktop unit and IE comes up and connects instantly.

I am using sbc yahoo anti spy, spywareblaster,spybot, ccleaner, ad-aware, regcleaner and, AVG. I got rid of Norton and Zonealarm, it initially looked like there was a conflict with those two programs that was causing the problem but now I guess not.



For both the router and IE browser settings I have idle disconnect time set at 0.

I may have solved my own problem. On IE I checked the "never dial" option on the connections page. I guess the computer and the router were dueling it out for the/a connection to my ISP. I did this earlier today and haven't experienced any problems on either computer.
