IE Error and Tcpip Warning

I am posting this to see if anyone else out there has come across either of these two issues with Windows XP SP2. I have posted the issues on Microsoft’s site in the communities section under the IE and XP areas. Before I explain the issues let me say that neither can be reproduced with any consistency. The IE error has only happened twice in the last month and the Tcpip warning in my event viewer under system has occurred only 3 times, but in the last 4 days. In both cases I cannot seem to pin down whether I am accessing a site or program, like Adobe or Sun Java (both of which are used a lot when I’m on line), that causes either of these to come up. The only recent downloads are my updates to Mcafee and Adobe along with the Vx2 cleaner from Adaware (it found nothing) and CCleaner (which I have yet to run). I only surf quality sites like Lavasoft, Microsoft, CCleaner, some University Homepages and athletic sites, along with informational questions I type in Google. I have found both of these listed in Microsoft communities where people have followed the suggestions of the MVP’s regarding Spyware & Adaware, Winsock possibilities, and even uninstalling and reinstalling all of Windows. Nothing has corrected these random issues and some users are very frustrated. Below are the detailed descriptions of them:

First, upon exiting IE I have gotten an error which pops up after IE closes. It reads:

    iexplore.exe – Application Error

The instructions at 0x017d494e referenced memory at 0x00000008. The memory could not be “read”.

Click on OK to terminate the program.

Now, once I click OK, the box closes and I am back to normal. Can go right back on the web with no difficulty and surf as before. No need to restart or anything. The first time this happened, a couple of weeks ago, the same error came up but the numbers referenced were different. I think the second number was 0x000000000, all zeros.

The second issue is something I find in my event viewer under system. It is a Warning called Tcpip. No error or warning pops up on my screen. It can only be seen in the event viewer. Upon researching this I find that a new security in SP2 has limited the number of incomplete outbound connections to 10 where with SP1 it was unlimited. So anytime the number reaches the max, this warning is logged. Could this be a legitimate program on my machine causing this? I look in my event viewer and have not seen this warning much until recently (3 times last 4 days). However, have seen it before, maybe 2 months ago. Is this something that others are getting and is it something to be concerned about.

Sorry for the long post. However, any information about these issues and whether they are just a normal occurrence when computing would be greatly -appreciated.

    Thanks.

your second issue is normal for SP2 and in the error log you no doubt see this > "EventID 4226 TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts"

Reason for this addition in SP2 is to try and reduce the harm that trojans like blaster can do, you can with a none-MS patch remove this limit.

    some info for you http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497

as for thr first issue ... do you have all current updates from MS?

    Halo, thanks for your response.

Yes, I am over religious about updates for Windows XP SP2. I also have Mcafee viruscan actively running, Mcafee firewall plus, Mcafee add/popup/& web bug blockers in their privacy service. I also use only AOL for email and all services that come with that for protection (on their server). Have a linksys router with good firewall. Run adaware SE updated. Run their VX2 addin (always clean). I delete all cookies, Temp files (on/offline), history, SSL certificates, and all autocompletes 4 or more times a day. I have downloaded CCleaner and plan on running it soon.

The IE error, from what I understand is a memory access error. Only occurred twice in the last month (also had an IE hang a week ago fault bucket 126637809 but don't know if this is applicable, only happened once). I called Dell and ran through a memory check, memory passed all tests.

So, just want to know if this is just a random thing, and nothing to get concerned over or something I should investigate further. Any further assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

PS - Tcpip warning is exactly as you described in the event viewer. Only reason I am concerned is because of the description MS gives about the possibility of malicous software casusing this warning. I have seen this 3 times in the last 3 days. Usually after surfing alot on the web. Also, found out that legitimate programs that try to update themselves, like Mcafee, may cause the same thing. Is this true?

The Tcp/ip warning is normal especially if you have many concurent pages open or as you say some applications will try to check for updates so if more connections are made that are allowed in SP2 then you will have a log entry... I personally used the tweak in that page I listed earlier to remove the limitations.... and dont have that log ID now.

as for the first errors i can only at present think that if you have any browser helpers ( yahoo toolbar, etc ) that one of those could be causing the problem.
