... things like Windows update, links in MSN messenger, etc open with IE. Is there a way to disable this? I am using XP Pro and Avant is my default browser.

Junga, robo's right. You can't use Windows Update in your other browser, and any other Microsoft-created shortcut is likely NOT to be just a plain URL (which would trigger your default browser), but a shortcut that FIRST launches IE, and THEN goes to the URL.

It's one of the complex little dark corners that the massive lawsuit against MS that is STILL dragging on in some quarters -- was all about.

You know, I thought this first and was going to include it my post as well but I second guessed myself out of putting it in  . Wouldn't surprise me if this the case.

The MS apps are probably calling IE directly instead of launching a link.
