I think I may have deleted a system file trying to get rid of a spyware program. What ever I deleted its gone for good as I emptied the recycle bin doing something else.

Anyway, I tried uninstalling IE 6.0 or actually rolled it back to 5 and then the buttons and menu were there again. Then when I re-installed 6.0. They are missing again.

Any way to get IE on there fresh?

See how you go using IE Fix.

    Any changes?

    no that didn't do anything.

And it asked for a service pack 4 disk which I didn't have so I don't know if that would have made a difference.

And there is not status bar on it either. There is only a window frame with an address bar.

Ahh. What happens if you press F11?

no that's not it. It does make it go full screen and back but still same problem.

I need to describe it better.

    There is a frame.
With a blue title bar displaying the name of the page at top (example Yahoo).
Below the blue title bar is a gray bar where the buttons should be but they are not there.
Below that is the address bar.

    Something else I noticed.

If I use Windows Explorer and select IE icon on left side tree control, I get the browser as it should be with buttons and all.

If I drag the web address icon (right mouse down) down to the tool tray like you normally make a short cut it puts an icon next to the other icons and if I click it it goes to that short-cutted page and the explorer is show with all buttons. clicking my IE shortcut on desktop shows malformed browser missing buttons. ???

Here is my IE properties for my bad shortcut.
    Target: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
    Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

    is that right?

    ok I just noticed alsol.
It doesn't matter if I use Windows Exlporer or not.
If I drag the address icon of the bad browser to the desktop to make a short cut and then click that short cut, I get the full browser with all buttons menu and status bar.

but my Internet Exlporer (big E Icon) launches a bad browser.

    ??

    launching here:

    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE = bad

Launching here from a desktop short cut = good

    HI!
    Yes, that is right.
    Maybe this will help:
Right click the 'bad' icon and delete it.
    Then:
    Windows Explorer>Program Files>Internet Explorer
Right click the IE Icon and create a new shortcut on your desktop.

ok, it still looks like I may have some spyware on here.

When I do a search in the bad browser, like "Chevy cars" for example,
the yahoo search results displays one like www.chevy.com but when I click that search result I am directed to www.carsdirect.com??

Think I need to do a Hijack this log and get some help.

Strangely If I click the link in my message above, it goes to that site with good browser and buttons. But if I click a search result in bad browser, it goes somewhere else. ???

Could I have a browser plugin (BHO) somewhere doing this?

When you do a file search for IEXPLORE.EXE do you come up with more than one?
If so, where are they located?
You can find the plugins you have by right clicking the IE icon>select Properties>click Find Target
You will see the Plugins folder and can check what you have there.

I just find the one file.

    The plugins look normal.

I posted a HJT log on castle cops to see if someone can help me find something.

    Thanks,

I might try those, I'm running CCLeaner and Ewido per instructions currently.

I think I figure out the tool bar menu problem.
I noticed that when I got the good browser appearance by clicking a shortcut I made, it had a yahoo search bar.

So I uninstalled it and all browsers back to normal. I think I may have deleted the Yahoo toolbar dll out of windows system32 thinking it was bad and it malformed my browser when that program was crippled.

    Still checking spyware remnants.
