Hi, I can't open IE. I cannot find it on my laptop when I search for it but if I try to install IE9 it says I already have a newer version on the laptop? Could you help please? Please tell me what else you need. Thanks, Jan

Well it should be right there on your Start > All Programs menu but if it isn't then type iexplore.exe into the Start > Search box and hit Enter. If that starts it we will tell you how to get it onto your Start menu.

    Hello Earthling,

It is not on start menu, and have tried search but it just says "no items match your search"

    Hi Jan

Strange indeed! Can you just confirm that when you say you have tried Search you do mean you have typed IEXPLORE.EXE and not something else? When you typed it, those words should pop up at the top of the Start menu box, as in this pic. Did it? If so click it, and if not then tell us what if anything did pop up.

Looking back at your earlier threads Jan it seems this laptop has a troubled history. Have you considered reinstalling 7 or using your recovery CDs to take it back to its 'as delivered' state, whichever you have the means to do?

Hi again, I definitely searched OK and it just said 'no items match your search'.

I know what you mean about the history, but it has just recently had the second new hard drive installed under guarantee and so was returned to me as new! Unfortunately I always use Firefox not IE and so cannot say when this problem developed. i just found it recently!

I guess the retailer did the disk replacement? Whatever he did he does not seem to have given you a fully working Win 7 installation. If you are unable to use the recovery partition or recovery CDs yourself your only other option would be to go back and discuss this issue with him. Sorry I can't be more helpful :(

    Hi again,
I think it must have been there when I got the laptop back from Acer, otherwise I couldn't have installed Firefox?
    Jan
just seen post from plodr, and will try the link.

I kept trying and eventually got the link. Downloaded IE9 again but it won't install............says..........."setup can't continue because a more recent version of IE is installed on your computer"
    HELP!

Click the windows key and then type iexp. You should get a listing and iexplore should be there. Write down the path.
Navigate to the path and see if you can put iexplore.exe as a shortcut on the desktop.
If you click iexplore.exe IE should open.

Do you mean type in the search box for iexp?
Have done that but there are no results at all.
Could I have uninstalled it by accident somehow?

Let's go behind the scenes here and see what's up -

Start > Computer, click Organize (top left) > Folder and Search Options - View tab and select Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives.

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86) > Internet Explorer, click on it and look for iexplore.exe (or just iexplore)

    Is it there?

Sorry, nothing happens! I've also tried to 'run as administrator' but it just doesn't open!

This is a bit drastic but I can't see it can do much harm. Delete the Internet Explorer folder - if it will let you - and then try the download and reinstall again.

File access denied.............need permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file

I did expect something like that - it's a permissions issue and rather advanced. I'd rather avoid that if we can but there are other ways to delete protected folders.

If you want to continue with this - and that depends on how important this is to you - then download Puppy Linux. It's an iso file and has to be burnt to CD as an iso, not just copied to CD. If you don't have burning software then use CDBurnerXP which, despite its name, runs well in Win 7 and is simple to use.

I do understand if you may not want to go down this road but if you want to go on then see if you can get the iso burnt and try to boot your computer with it.

    Let me know.

Hi, it's getting a bit beyond me now, so could you tell me the pro's and con's of doing this? What would happen if I don't do anything? do I need IE? Jan

No, you don't actually have to have IE, but it is an indication that there may be other problems with your system. However if it seems to be running OK, and if Windows is updating itself OK, then you could just leave it as it is and see how it goes.

Hi, been thinking about what you've said, and I think maybe there are other issues with the laptop as you say! Incredimail is not working properly despite doing everything recommended to correct it. I thought it was updating OK because every time I log off it has updates, and I have checked the history and they were all successful. However, I have just looked again, and it is the same update every day......although it says successful every time. It is

I think I will have to go back to factory settings and reinstall everything, but I'm a bit scared. I did make the recommended set of recovery discs (3) and 1 which is called Acer Application Drivers. Are these all I need to do a reinstallation?. What do I do if it all goes wrong?

    Really appreciate your help,

    Jan

I've never used recovery disks as I use an imaging program that can restore my system to any previous state I have decided to keep. If you are concerned at using recovery disks you could first do the same, by keeping an image of the system as it is right now. All you would need is a free imaging program such as EaseUS Todo, and an external drive to store the image file on.

However if you don't want to do all that then just make sure you have first saved any personal files you want to retain - and don't forget your emails! - and boot to the recovery disk. That should put your comp right back where it was the day you bought it, though I have no idea why Acer also provide a drivers disk as you shouldn't have any need for it. Maybe someone else can explain that.
