I am running Windows XP Pro SP 3 and IE 8.0.6001. Three weeks ago, I noticed that my system was slower and IE is freezing a lot. I have run CCleaner. I have run Malwarebytes. I have virus scanned and spyware scanned and all seems to be fine. Last week I openned TASK MANAGER and noticed that I had 7 IEXPLORER.EXE running. I closed them all and my system went back to normal. Over the last week, when my system has slowed again, I close all windows and TASK MANAGER again shows 3 or 4 IEXPLORER.EXE running even after I have closed all windows. My current IE shows 37,100 K useage but some in the past have been 200,000 k useage and more. Again, when I terminate those processes, my system returns to normal and all seems fine.

Anyone have suggestions? Why so many running even after I have closed all IE windows?

Thank you for the direction but I read the post and it does not seem to cover my problem. I understand that there will be more than one listing of IE running when I have windows open. My problem is after I close my IE windows, I am still showing IEXPLORER.EXE running. When I just got home from work now, there were 5 IEXPLORER.EXE on task manager but no open windows. My system was low on virtual memory as well. After I manually closed each instance of IE, my system seems fine. Again, I have run virus, malware and spyware scans and nothing.

Download and run Process Explorer if the IEXPLORER.exe do not disappear after a few minutes of closing your browser.
See what is using those files. It could be an addon or it could be a scheduled task. Once you know, you can start fixing it.

Thank you...OK I closed all my IE windows and still 20 minutes later, there was 1 iexplorer.exe running in task manager. According to Process manager it is under one of the many SVCHOST.EXE. When I most pointer over it is described as

    Command Line:
    C:\windows\system32\svchost - k DCom launch
    Path:
    C:\windows\system32\SVCHOST.EXE [Dcom Launch]
    Services:
    DCOM Service Process Launcher [DcomLaunch]
    Terminal Services [TermService]

What is alarming is the K it is using. Most other processes are running 3000 k, some 22,000 and a couple only a couple of hundred. This iexplorer is running at 125,000. When I have had 3 or 4 running, some have been over 300,000.

Again, thank you and to anyone for any help.

I think I solved it. I deleted (with GREAT DIFFICULTY I MIGHT ADD) Vgrabber that had been installed. It was a toolbar of some sort and that seems to have solved the problem. I am rebuilding the damage now. Thank you all for your help.

Go into Services... stop the DCOMLaunch service, disable it from starting and reboot.

ooops, I see you solved it.

    Is that a typo?
    1. iexplore.exe relates to Internet Explorer.
    2. explorer.exe to Windows Explorer.

    IEXPLORER.exe would be a bug.
If that is not a typo, I'd head over to the Read and Run Me.

    Cheers..
