IE6 and Active X

My browser started acting strange, very strange. I only use MS Internet Explorer with my Win98se, not out of any higher reasons, just laziness and an unwillingness to climb a learning curve. Some of the symptoms were pretty subtle and hard to lay a finger on, some not. What was not hard to notice was the wallpaper "fragmenting" and repeating blocks. This would happen when I exited my browser. Now I've been playing with a bunch of new software packages, and uninstalling them, so I tried reinstalling IE6 (I have the installation disk). No Go.

So I looked at the programs that have been installed on my machine. The ones that jumped out at me was something VM upgrade (series of number I didn't write down) and Active X 9.0 by Adobe. I removed both of them, and my old computer was back. I then went into IE properties and removed the prompt to DL active X on my security.

What was the VM I removed? I suspect it is something I can live without, but it bugs me.

Are there any circumstances I need Active X? I've been here long enough to know it is not really needed, and I think I know what it is, but I just want to know where I'll run into problems not having it. I think MS webpages are just about the only folks who use it, am I right?

    Thanks in advance.

OK, found my first instance of problems with no active x, U Tube bit the dust. I may yet have to go to another browser. I'm open for ideas.

OK, lets try this question, there was a site that had the old addons, things like Q-Time, for older operating systems. I didn't bookmark it (and now feel stupid).

Anyone remember where this site was?

Sheesh, I gotta stop talking to myself here, the site I was asking about is:

    http://www.oldversion.com/

Could still use some ideas on my wallpaper fragmentation and Internet Glitchouts. Thanks.
