IE6 and XP proxy and homepage grayed out

I just finished rebuilding a laptop. When I was finished I found that the following happened in Internet settings.

1. The homepage under the general tab was grayed out.

2. The proxy server setting under lan setting on the connections tab was also grayed out.

Does anyone know how to correct this short of reinstalling everything.

Try Dial-A-Fix and/or IEFix, both are free downloads you can get right here, from 'The Geeks'. You'll need your XP CD handy for IEFix.....
You might also try LSPFix by cexx and WinSockRepair.... also free, right here. Maybe try a system restore to a date before the rebuild. Check the device manager and see if the internet drivers (NIC, modem) are loaded correctly.

The drivers are a kinda shot in the dark, but worth a try....

 

These are for advanced users only. Using LSPFix without proper knowledge can cause the LSP chain to be broken causing internet loss.

 

It's hard to say exactly what the cause is but I have seen this many times on infected machines. When you say "rebuilding" do you mean a format reinstall or what?

 

It was a format and reinstall.

 

If it was formatted then it shouldn't be malware however it's possible if internet was connected without proper protection. To rule this out follow the steps below. Attach a log once completed and I will confirm whether it's malware or something else.
