The other tech here installed the updates for a Win98 machine that was in here he says after installing IE6 SP1 the favorites disappeared and now it is just the default ones. So the question is, did the install delete them or hide them in another directory?

Thanks for you time and any help.

I personally never heard of such thing but why don't they try searching for files with .url extension?
    Start > Search/Find > *.url

nor have I ever experienced it in the hundreds of machines I've installed patches on.

I have, it only comes up with the default favorites. i.e. MSN, Gateway Support, Hotmail, etc.

I ask the question because I've had other program installs hide old settings in some directory and search (even when set to hidden and system files) will not find it, I had to manually browse to the folder in the command prompt.

I haven't heard of it happening either, and this is why I'm getting angry about the lack of documentation, I haven't touched the machine yet so I have no clue what's been done outside of the checklist. (Is modem working? check Is Monitor working? check Does it have AV installed? check)

I guess your favs are gone. Using a data recovery program might have worked if the HD was not replaced and no new data was saved or existing data was modified which either operation would significantly reduces your chances of successful data recovery. Going forward backup your own files, at least the favorites folder since even a crowded list would be under a MB you could use a floppy disk or zip the entire folder and e-mail it from one of your e-mail addresses to another and have a backup of it accessible from every PC with an Internet connection. I use a 128MB USB Flash memory device, it is awesome for backing up personal files or transfering data between PC (but of course forget the USB device if the OS is NT).
If you are confident it was backup under a different name you could ask the techs who worked on it but I doubt it, if you remember the name of one of your favorites I would do a search using that unique name so even if their extensions were changed the name should have remained the same I imagine?
    Good Luck.
